Actuarial Science

Identify, assess and manage risks to achieve success in the financial and insurance industries

The specialization is also designed to gain some Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) credit with the Society of Actuaries.

The Society of Actuaries is the sole authority on credit recognition for VEE.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 5.5 (70%) is required to pass from the second year to the third year of the program. Students in good standing but not meeting the GPA requirement will be transferred to the B.A. in Mathematics.

Successful completion of the actuarial specialization does not guarantee that candidates will become qualified actuaries. Students will be required to pass exams administered by the Society of Actuaries to practice as an Actuary in Canada or the United States. Students should start writing actuarial exams while enrolled in university and should continue writing exams after graduation as well. Most of the material for the following preliminary exams will be covered by the specialization: Exam P, Exam FM. Furthermore, significant portions of the material for the following exams will also be covered: Exam IFM, Exam LTAM, Exam STAM, Exam SRM, Exam PA. The specializations also offer the possibility to gain either most or all of the VEE (Validation by Educational Experience) credit with the Society of Actuaries.

General requirements:

• Maximum of 48 credits allowed at First Year level
• The Honors degree designation will be given to a student who obtains an overall GPA average of at least 5.5.
