How do I apply?
This section will guide you through the application process, starting from your initial visit to our website as a prospective exchange student, to being nominated by your home university and completing the Laurentian University exchange application. Exchange students can study at Laurentian through the following pathways:
- Exchange Student: Students from partner institutions may attend Laurentian University as part of a university exchange agreement.
- Consortium Agreement (UMAP) Participant: Students can study at Laurentian under the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) consortium agreement.
- Institutions without an Exchange Agreement: Students from institutions without an exchange agreement may enroll at Laurentian University for a short-term study period by paying tuition fees directly to Laurentian. For more information, please email lugo@laurentian.ca.

Steps to Apply
- Nomination by Your Home University: After receiving approval from your home university for the exchange program, your exchange coordinator will nominate you to Laurentian University using the exchange nomination form.
- Laurentian Exchange Application: Upon receiving your nomination, Laurentian University will email you an application form along with confirmation of your nomination.
- Submit Your Application and Supporting Documents: Once you have submitted your application, you will be required to provide a scanned copy of your transcript, a letter of interest, and proof of language proficiency.
- Receive Your Letter of Acceptance to Laurentian: If you meet all admission requirements, you will receive your letter of offer via your applicant portal.
- Apply for On-Campus Housing: If you plan to live on campus, we encourage you to apply for housing as early as possible to increase your chances of securing your preferred accommodation. For more information visit this link or contact our residence department at residences@laurentian.ca.
- Register for Courses: Once your exchange application is accepted, you will gain access to the course registration system. You will need to complete a learning agreement with the assistance of your program or academic advisor.

Grade point average (GPA):
Laurentian University’s admission requirements apply to all incoming undergraduate students. Candidates seeking admission as exchange students must have a minimum cumulative GPA equivalent to 70%, indicating above-average academic performance.
Academic Standing:
Students must maintain good academic standing at their home institution and meet all admission requirements, as well as any specific criteria set by their home institution. Applicants must also be currently registered at the undergraduate or graduate level.
English or French language ability:
This requirement applies only if English or French is not your native language or if the language of instruction at your home university is not English. Test scores must be from an examination taken within the past two years. The minimum required scores for TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE, TCF, and academic IELTS are listed below. Application Process
All applications are reviewed by the International Office and the Admissions Department. During this review, Laurentian may contact partner universities and students for additional information, if required. Once a decision has been made, students will be notified by email regarding their admission status and the next steps in the acceptance process.
Steps After Application Processing:
- Verify Personal Information: Ensure that your legal name, date of birth, and permanent address are accurately listed on both the student application and the offer letter.
- Accept the Admission Offer: Students must accept the admission offer via their student portal account before the stated expiry date.
- Download the Letter of Acceptance (LOA): Students can download the LOA from their student portal account. This document may be required for immigration applications (e.g., TRV, ETA). Please review the specific immigration documentation
- Create Your My.Laurentian Account:
This step should be completed after students have accepted their offer in the student portal. Once this is done, students can proceed with course selection. - Course Selection and Registration:
Course selection is considered complete once students have successfully activated their My.Laurentian account. After activation, students are required to select their courses for the exchange period and ensure that any associated fees are paid. A full-time course load at Laurentian is 15 credits (equivalent to five 3-credit courses) per term. All incoming exchange students must maintain full-time student status throughout their studies at Laurentian. Course offerings typically become available in June for the upcoming Fall/Winter term.
Additionally, students should complete a Learning Agreement in consultation with their program coordinator to ensure that selected courses align with their academic goals.
Nominations
Nomination Procedure
The Exchange Coordinator at the home university is required to submit student nominations via email to Lugo@laurentian.ca. The following information must be provided and submitted via email by the Exchange Coordinator at the home institution:
- Student’s full name
- Email address
- Field/program of study at the home institution
- Intended program at Laurentian University
- Study level (e.g., 3rd year, 4th year, etc.)
- Start date and duration of the exchange
Once nominated, you will receive an email with instructions on how to complete the Laurentian University exchange application form.
Nomination Deadline
- Fall semester (September entry): Application deadline - April 1st.
- Winter semester (January entry): Application deadline - October 1st.
Required Application Documents
The following documents are required for submission:
- Completed and signed application form
- Proof of English proficiency (if required)
- Academic transcripts (must be sent directly from the applicant’s home institution’s international office)
- Statement of Intent (1–2 pages)
- Detailed résumé
- Letters of reference, if applicable

Costs
Tuition
Due to the structure of university-level exchange agreements, you will not be required to pay tuition to Laurentian University during your time here. This is because you are effectively "swapping places" with Laurentian students. Any Laurentian student participating in an exchange to your home university will pay their standard tuition to Laurentian University for their exchange semester. Similarly, you will pay your standard tuition to your home university for the semester you spend at Laurentian. Our exchange agreement with your home university ensures that these tuition fees are balanced.
Mandatory Fees
As an exchange student, you are required to pay the following:
- UHIP fee ($264 per semester)
- Residence fees, if living on campus
Other Semester Expenses
- Textbooks and course material: $50-150
- Furnishings, linens, cookware: $50-500
Prepare to come to Laurentian University
Flights
You are required to be at Laurentian University from the start of the international orientation, or the orientation for international exchange students, through to the conclusion of the exam period. Please consult the academic schedule for important dates and ensure that your travel plans accommodate the December holiday closure.

Housing
The decision regarding your housing is ultimately yours. For more information on the available housing options, please refer to the "Where You Will Live" section. Laurentian University offers a variety of affordable housing options, ranging from dorm-style rooms to fully furnished units. All rental fees include utilities, Wi-Fi, a full or partial meal plan, and access to various residence events and support programs designed to help you stay comfortable and connected.
Immigration
All exchange students will enter Canada as visitors and will require either a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), unless exempt. Please review the following guidelines:
- Visa-Required Countries: If you are from a country that requires a visa, you must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). It is recommended to submit your application as soon as you receive your Letter of Acceptance.
- Visa-Exempt Countries: If you are from a visa-exempt country, you may need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Ensure that you apply at least one month before your arrival, once your flight to Canada is booked.
- Stays Exceeding Six Months: If your exchange at Laurentian University is expected to last more than six months, you must apply for a study permit from within Canada. Orientation
All exchange students are required to attend International Orientation, our dedicated event for international and exchange students. Additionally, you have the option to register for other orientation programs, such as Undergraduate Orientation or Graduate Orientation. Please ensure that you register for each orientation program you plan to attend.
