Frequently Asked Questions
Who can access counselling services?
Confidential, short-term counselling services are offered free of charge to all students currently enrolled in courses, who are located in Ontario at the time of the appointment.
How can I prepare for my first counselling session?
To make the most of your session, it can be helpful to come prepared with specific concerns or challenges you'd like to address. You might also want to think about a goal you hope to achieve through counselling.
Please allow up to 60 minutes for your initial visit. During this time, we will:
- Explain what you can expect from the counselling process.
- Discuss the main issues and concerns you are facing.
- Work together to develop a plan for your counselling and/or explore appropriate referral options, both on and off campus, that best fit your needs.
Are my counselling sessions confidential?
Yes, all interactions with our counsellors are strictly confidential. Your counselling record is separate from your official University records and will not be disclosed without your explicit consent, except in specific, legally mandated extenuating circumstances.
Only team members directly involved in your support will have access to your information. We adhere to the regulations set out in the Personal Health Information Protection Act ("PHIPA"), the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ("FIPPA"), and the standards of our respective regulatory colleges.
What is the cancellation policy for missed appointments?
Life happens, we get it! We know balancing school, work, and life can be a lot. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance.
Since our counselling services are in high demand, giving us an early heads-up allows another student to take that slot. Please note that missing an appointment without notice may mean a longer wait for your next booking.
How do I know if this service is right for me?
If you would like more information about counselling services, you are welcome to schedule a 15 minute appointment with a counsellor, who will explain the services that are available and answer any questions you may have.
