With a fully revitalized curriculum, the Master of Business Administration program is available in a flexible format, allowing for full- or part-time studies completed online, on-campus or through a combination of both formats. The fast-track option for business graduates provides recognition towards foundational courses, allowing for the completion of the program in less than one year.
Building on core business foundations, the MBA program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to take their clients’ businesses to the next level. Courses focus on ethical leadership, advanced financial and marketing concepts, managing information systems, and business strategy, and explore the complexities of managing within a global context.
In addition to the existing general MBA option, students will have an opportunity to choose a pathway from the following: Global Management, Analytics and Operations. Recent graduates will be required to complete a work-integrated learning program that will give them the experience needed to move their career forward.

Students who have graduated with a business degree from a recognized university, and who meet the eligibility requirements, can receive advanced standing. As such, these students could complete the two-year program in an accelerated, one year basis.

Advanced standing towards the Business Foundations of the MBA can provide substantial time and cost savings. Full-time students can also access Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) opportunities.

Graduates of undergraduate business programs will be assessed towards the fast-track MBA with advanced standing provided for the Business Foundations portion of the program.
Applicants with less than 2 years of intermediate level experience will be required to complete an additional 3-credit experiential learning course.
Applicants will be assessed for advanced standing towards courses in the Business Foundations level (provided that they received a minimum of 70% in equivalent courses as assessed by the MBA Admissions Committee) for a maximum of 21 credits towards the degree.
Admission Requirements
In order to be admitted to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Laurentian University, you must meet the minimum admission requirements and submit a complete application package.
Minimum admission requirements:
- 4-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university or equivalent and a score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The combination of GPA and GMAT score must correspond to the table below. *

GMAT Waiver: Applicants with significant intermediate-level work experience may apply without a GMAT and will be required to submit a GMAT waiver with their application package. A successful waiver will demonstrate at least 6 years of "intermediate" level experience. More information is available at the bottom of the admission requirements page. |
Please note that a GMAT score is valid for 5 years after the date of issue. The Office of Admissions will not accept GMAT scores that do not meet this criteria.
Notice: Applicants who have attended post-secondary institutions outside of North America and wish to receive Advanced Standing in the MBA, must have their foreign transcripts and diplomas assessed by World Education Services (WES). Laurentian University requires a WES Credential Evaluation Report, including a Course-by-Course Analysis. WES evaluations must be sent directly to the Office of Admissions. Applicants that do not wish to receive Advanced Standing can satisfy the Academic Transcript requirement by providing the official transcripts as defined by our policy.
Application process:
Step 1. Click here to submit the online application. Once students have applied, they will receive instructions (typically within 48 hours) from the Office of Admissions leading them to the myLaurentian portal. Sign-in credentials will be provided in the correspondence received from the Office of Admissions upon successful completion and payment of an application.
The following documents will be required in order to complete the application and satisfy the admission requirements:

- Official GMAT Test Report or GMAT Waiver Request Form
- Official Academic Transcript(s) from all post-secondary studies* (Please note that current or prior Laurentian University students do not need to request transcripts)
*Please note that official transcripts or WES course-by-course (for institutions attended outside of North America) must come directly to the Office of Admissions from the previous post-secondary institution by requesting at the time of your application or by contacting the institution's Registrar's Office.
Step 2. Once the Admissions Office receives all information and the application is deemed complete, the application will be forwarded to the department. The MBA Admissions Committee meets to review the applications.
Step 3. The MBA Admissions Committee will review all applications on file and make a decision regarding the suitability of each applicant. The MBA Committee will then make a recommendation to the School of Graduate Studies at Laurentian University. Graduate Studies will verify the dossier and if satisfactory, it will be forwarded to the Office of Admissions at Laurentian University to process the offer.
Step 4: If approved for admission, the Office of Admissions will send the student an offer of admission via myLaurentian (located in the documents section). Applicants wishing to accept the offer of admission must indicate their response on myLaurentian within 3 weeks of receiving the offer.
Admission to the MBA program is competitive and will be based on the MBA Admission Committee’s relative rankings of applications. The Committee will review each application individually and assess each applicant’s own combination of prior education and unique strengths in determining the applicant’s ability to successfully undertake the MBA program.
Defining Significant Intermediate work experience for the GMAT Waiver
MBA candidates that hold a minimum of 6 years of “intermediate” level experience may be admissible without the GMAT. “Intermediate” experience is defined as experience that requires judgement and originality in the application of knowledge, independent thinking, and some management level responsibilities including carrying out work from the planning stage through completion of the tasks required to accomplish the objectives. Supervision of other employees is not required. Entry-level positions do not meet this definition.
Some examples of positions that qualify for intermediate level experience: President / Owner, Vice-President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer, Chairman, Director, Account Manager, Regional Manager, Senior Broker, Brokerage Manager, Analyst, Comptroller, College instructor, Accountant

Effective September 2016, COMM course codes will be replaced with ACCT, MGMT, MKTG, OPER and FNCE codes. This table explains the course equivalencies to help students and others understand the transition to the new course codes.
MBA – General Management (ALSO OFFERED ONLINE)
The MBA program is comprised of foundations, core, capstone, and experiential learning courses for a total of 45 credits. Advanced standing can be assessed towards the foundations courses and the work integrated learning course only. A set of 15 credits of advanced standings is awarded to CPA, or CPA candidates enrolled in the Professional Experience Program (PEP). A minimum of 30 credits or 33 credits (if the student has no prior work experience) is required to complete the MBA program (residency requirement).

PROGRAM REGULATIONS
To graduate with the MBA degree a student must:
Achieve a minimum a grade of “C” in each MBA course;
Achieve a minimum GPA of 5.5 on all MBA courses; and
Complete a minimum of 30 credits of MBA courses at Laurentian University.
Sample Courses
This course focuses on the fundamentals of accounting with an emphasis on financial statement analysis and interpretation. Students will use financial ratios to make informed organizational decisions. Using and interpreting various costing principles will empower students to make informed product or service pricing decisions. Budgeting processes will enable students to ensure organizational alignment with management strategic goals and planning. 3 credits. Students cannot retain credit for COMM 5106, COMM 5107, and COMM 5001.
This course takes a non-traditional approach to world management decision processes. Students will move from basic profit-maximization problems and optimal pricing to utilizing decision trees in high risk, uncertain environments. Lecture. 3 cr Prerequisites: none Students cannot retain credit for COMM 5806 or COMM 5807 and COMM 5032. Students that completed COMM 5816 and COMM 5817 cannot retain credit for COMM 5032.
This course explores how to analyze the financial performance and position of a company and how to make investment and financing decisions to reach financial goals. Students can expect to improve their financial problem-solving and decision-making skills including for their own personal finances. 3 credits. Prerequisite: ACCT 5001. Students cannot retain credit for COMM 5206, COMM 5207, COMM 5002 and FNCE 5001.
This course examines important issues in corporate finance from the perspective of financial managers who are responsible for making significant investment and financing decisions. This course reviews the theory and empirical evidence related to the investment and financing policies of the firm and attempts to further develop decision-making and problem-solving skills. The topics include cost of capital calculation, valuation, leasing, long-term capital raising, capital structure, payout policy, mergers and acquisitions, options and risk management. 3 credits. Online delivery or Lecture on-campus Prerequisite: FNCE 5001. Students cannot retain credit for both COMM 5102 and FNCE 5101.
This course focuses on the application of organizational behaviour concepts, theories and research to explain and understand human behaviour in organizations and its impact on organizational performance. Influences at the individual, group and organizational level are analyzed covering core concepts such as motivation, team dynamics, conflict management, leadership, organizational culture, and change management, among others. 3 credits. Students cannot retain credit for COMM 5405,COMM 5406,COMM 5407, COMM 5012 and HROB 5001.
This course introduces students to the basic principles of marketing including the marketing environment, consumer segmentation and positioning, the 4 Ps (product, price, place and promotion), and marketing strategy. The method of instruction includes lectures, case studies and experiential learning using a computer simulation. Students will be able to determine consumer needs, evaluate marketing opportunities, establish target market segments and develop and communicate a marketing strategy. This course is designed to provide students with the tools to fully assess a company's customer, competitive and market landscape and to develop effective marketing plans to achieve the firm's long-term objectives. This course will use theory and experiential learning opportunities to assist in the learning process. By course completion, students will have the tools needed to analyze and develop strategic marketing plans for consumer-driven businesses. 3 credits. Online and on campus delivery. Prerequisite: MKGT 5001 Students cannot retain credit for both COMM 5111 and MKTG 5121.
This course focuses on the application of the principal statistical concepts used in managerial decision-making such as the basic probability theory and the assessment of probabilities from sample data; display of sample information and description of data; the Binomial, Poisson, Normal and Exponential probability distributions; hypothesis testing; X2 distribution and tests for goodness of fit; simple and multiple linear regression; correlation of qualitative and quantitative data. Through lectures and application of statistical techniques to managerial decision-making situation students will learn to select, apply and interpret statistical techniques and results to formulate and support their recommendations. 3 credits. Online delivery or Lecture on-campus. Students cannot retain credit for both COMM 5021 and OPER 5001.
This course explores basic quantitative techniques used in managerial decision-making. The course studies how to select appropriate decision criteria and how to make decisions under uncertainty. Students apply and interprets outputs from resource allocation techniques such as linear programming, queuing theory and simulation techniques as they formulate and support their recommendations. Goal programming and dynamic programming are introduced, as well as the appropriate application of these techniques. (Lec 1, CST 0.5) cr 3.
This course examines the function of operations management including forecasting, inventory management, capacity and manpower planning, scheduling, plant location and quality control in various settings such as industrial, service and public organizations. Through presentations of the theory and applications to real world problems, students explore, develop and support their managerial recommendations. PREREQ: OPER 5001 EL. (Lec 1, CST 0.5) cr 3.
This course introduces the strategic value of information technology in contemporary business environments. The course adopts a management perspective in examining key concepts and issues related to using information technology to make informed business decisions. Topics include major tools and systems supporting decision making, sourcing and governance, ebusiness, organizational impacts of information technology, and ethical considerations. This course introduces students to the art and science of managing complex projectsthat require coordination, planning and milestone reporting. It provides them with an opportunity to apply their newly developed knowledge to real world situations. PREREQ: OPER 5001 EL. (Lec 1, CST 0.5) cr 3.
This course explores leadership in organizations that support the development, implementation, and audit of effective ethical programs in a global environment. In addition, societal-organizational interactions and governance issues are examined through the lens of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Personal values and the challenges of ethical leadership will be studied and explored, in CSR programs and practices that allow for good governance. 3 credits. Online and on campus delivery. Prerequisite: HROB-5001 Students cannot retain credits for both COMM 5101 and MGMT 5101.
This course explores the challenges of managing organizations in a global environment and will provide students with a framework for developing innovative strategies to deal with these challenges. Topics include globalization trends, the various dimensions of culture and will explore organizational responses to the changing business environment. 3 credits Online and on campus delivery Prerequisite: HROB 5001 Students cannot retain credits for both COMM 5112 and MGMT 5111.
This course focuses on integrating the mainstream concepts and principles of strategic management with analytical tools, techniques, and managerial tasks that are involved in strategy formulation and implementation. Students will be involved in learning through action by undertaking a managerial role in competition-based business strategy simulation and through the application of course content on real life strategic issues. 3 credits. In this capstone course students will learn to apply their analytical and critical thinking skills in the preparation and presentation of a business consulting report in order to help client organizations make their business decisions 3 credits. Online and on campus delivery. Prerequisites: Completion of COMM 5000 (Foundations) level courses Students cannot retain credits for both COMM 5131 and MGMT 5131.
This course focuses on the macro level issues of organizational environment, strategy, and design. Students develop an understanding of different organizational designs - the formal arrangements that are intended to shape how work is to be done. The course analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of different organizational designs and demonstrates the importance of choosing an appropriate design for a specific strategy. It emphasizes the international business context and describes the challenges senior managers face in creating and modifying an international strategy. 3 credits. Online and on campus delivery. Prerequisite: Completion of the Foundation Studies 5000 level courses. Students cannot retain credits for both COMM 5401 and MGMT 5201.
This course examines the pressures on modern organizations to be in a constant adaptive state to support and encourage innovation, and yet have a high performance company. Though an action learning framework, students will discuss and research the topic areas, identify and study a contemporary company that is a high-performance learning organization (HPLO), and will develop a plan to increase a specific company's learning and adaptability. Differences in culture and diversity will be considered in designing a HPLO plan. 3 credits. Online and on campus delivery. Prerequisite: Completion of the Foundations 5000 level courses . Students cannot retain credits for both COMM 5402 and MGMT 5211.
This course is a practical placement in the business environment so that students can apply their business knowledge in a work-integrated situation within a company or non-profit organization. Through a small action learning group they will explore and reflect on their experiences and as a result take corrective action during their placement. 3 credits. Prerequisites: Completion of the Foundations COMM 5000 level courses Students cannot retain credits for both COMM 5901 and MGMT 5901.
These courses are offered in different subject areas each year. Designed to meet the needs of students and faculty in dealing with subject areas not covered in other courses, this allows the flexibility essential in the exploration of emerging management concepts. Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Students cannot retain credits for both COMM 6016 and MGMT 5906.
