Micro-Credential
Program Description:
The respiratory care program for Registered Nurses focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia.
Micro-Course Offerings:
Micro-Course 1: Philosophy of Nursing and Common Respiratory Disease Part 1 (10 hours)
This course focuses on the philosophy of nursing as it relates to the respiratory client. Furthermore, the fundamentals of pathophysiology will be reviewed and common respiratory diseases will be introduced. Opportunities are provided for learners to integrate new and concurrent learning in regards to the philosophy of nursing as it applies to respiratory clients.
Micro-Course 2: Philosophy of Nursing and Common Respiratory Disease Part 2 (10 hours)
This course focuses on exploring various respiratory diseases. A case study approach will be used to facilitate understanding of the nursing care involved in caring for the client suffering from various degrees of respiratory disease.
Micro-Course 3: Pharmacology in Respiratory Care (10 hours)
This course focuses on the fundamentals of pharmacology and the assessment and management of pain and symptoms commonly experienced by a client with respiratory disease. Opportunities are provided for learners to reflect on the application of pain and symptom management. New and concurrent learning is integrated.
Micro-Course 4: Diagnostic Tools in Respiratory Care (10 hours)
This course focuses on the study of various respiratory diagnostic tools available to health practitioners. Opportunities are provided for learners to integrate new and concurrent learning.
Micro-Course 5: Interpretation of Blood Gases (10 hours)
This course focuses on study and analysis of blood gases that affect respiratory clients. Opportunities are provided for learners to integrate new and concurrent learning.

Critical Care
Micro-Credential
Program Description:
The Critical Care Micro-Credential offers a flexible, professional development opportunity to critical care registered nurses or registered nurses interested in working in critical care. Learners will gain advanced knowledge and specialized skills in respiratory, palliative, cardiac and critical care.
This program is designed to help prepare registered nurses for the CNA Critical Care Nursing Certification Examination.
Micro-Course Offerings:
Micro-Course 1: Critical Care: Part 1 (30 hours)
This course is the first part that focuses on the special needs of clients of all ages with multiple and critical health conditions. They require complex and continuous health care that is biopsychosocial, spiritual and cultural in nature. The application of the systematic approach to nursing care is critically based on evidence and a holistic and humanistic curative approach and interdisciplinary support.
Micro-Course 2: Critical Care: Part 2 (30 hours)

Micro-Credentials:
Each micro-credential is made up of one or more micro-courses. To complete and earn your micro-credential you will need to complete the required micro-course(s) for that topic.
A micro-credential is a short program, typically 12 weeks or less, that is awarded for completing one or multiple micro-courses that are focused on a specific skill or competency. You will receive your micro-credential in the form of a certificate.

You can register for any of our offerings up until two days prior to the offering start date.
AQ/ABQ Courses:
You can register for any of our offerings up until seven days prior to the offering start date.
Reimbursement
You can withdraw from the course and receive a full refund before the course start date. Any requests for reimbursements and withdrawals following the course start date will be declined.

Cardiac Care on the Web
Online Program
Cardiac Care on the Web is for Registered Nurses interested in Cardiac Care. This is an opportunity for Registered Nurses and third year nursing students to achieve specialty training, and prepare for accreditation opportunities. This experience facilitates independent learning. There are 12 one credit courses available within this program, after completing six one credit courses, you can apply for a Statement of Professional Learning.
By the end of this program participants will be able to:
- Relate philosophical approaches to the nursing process;
- Summarize developmental trands and health promotion opportunities relevant to the cardiac client;
- Identify the major cardiac vessels and the circulatory mechanisms associated with the cardiac system;
- Examine cardiac pressure systems for application to cardiac monitoring;
- Apply relevant research literature to the use of cardiovascular medications in the management of common cardiovascular problems;
- Discuss the nurse's role and responsibilities in the management of drug therapy;
- Identify the clinical presentations of heart failure;
- Explore complications associated with chronic heart failure;
- Interpret 12 lead ECG.

Palliative and End of Life Care
About The Micro-Credential
This program consists of five courses of 12 hours of study available completely online. Opportunities will be provided to apply the nursing process, demonstrate pattern recognition, increase self-directedness, and participate in the delivery of comprehensive care of palliative and end of life patients. Learners will examine the philosophy of hospice palliative care and the palliative approach to care. Case studies exemplifying holistic, family-centered nursing care of persons at the end of life who are experiencing pain and other symptoms will be discussed, including, ethical and legal dilemmas. After successfully completing all six modules, students will receive a Statement of Professional Learning from Laurentian University. A certificate of completion can be requested from the Centre for Teaching and Continuing Learning for each course completed.

Course 1: Philosophy of Palliative Care (12 hours)
Philosophy of Palliative and End of Life Care
This course focuses on the philosophy of nursing as it relates to the practice of hospice palliative care. Attitudes about the quality of life, end of life, and grief are explored including cultural and spiritual considerations for all client population demographics from children to older adults. Opportunities are provided for learners to integrate new and concurrent learning in regards to the philosophy of hospice palliative care.
Course 2: Pain and Symptom Management 1 (12 hours)
Pain and Symptom Management I
This course focuses on the fundamentals of pharmacology and the assessment and management of pain and symptoms commonly experienced by a persons with life limiting illnesses. Opportunities are provided for learners to reflect on the application of pain and symptom management. New and concurrent learning is integrated.
Course 3: Pain and Symptom Management 2 (12 hours)
Pain and Symptom Management 2
This course explores the assessment and management of physical and psychological symptoms as they relate to the care of the person with a life-limiting illness. Opportunities are provided for learners to reflect on the importance of symptom management in palliative care. Learners are required to integrate new and concurrent learning.
Course 4: Ethics and Legal Aspects of Palliative Care (12 hours)
Ethics and Legal Aspects of Palliative Care
This course focuses on discovering ethical and legal considerations in caring for a client at the end-of-life. Opportunities are provided for learners to engage in reflective practice when caring for persons at the end of life. New and concurrent learning is integrated.
Course 5: End of Life Care (12 hours)
End of Life Care
This course focuses on the basic principles of palliative end of life care, roles, and needs of caregivers throughout the end of life process. Opportunities are provided for learners to engage in the critical thinking process. Learners are required to integrate new and concurrent learning.
