Welcome to Laurentian University's Language Learning Centre (LLC), where we foster communication, understanding and mutual respect among our diverse students, staff and community. The LLC is part of the Centre for Teaching and Continuing Learning under the management of the Micro-credential and non-credit programming team.
Mission:
The Language Learning Centre (LLC) connects a diverse community of learners with the official languages of Laurentian University, French and English, promoting their acquisition and improvement within the University's bilingual and tricultural learning community. Rooted in this mission, and addressing a diverse community of learners, with particular priority given to francophones and learners wishing to perfect their French, the CAL offers innovative and high-quality language training. Thanks to qualified and expert trainers, rich and dynamic teaching resources, and an interactive approach, we contribute to the academic, professional, and personal development of learners, strengthening their ability to become the leaders of tomorrow and to make a positive impact on their journey and their contribution to a connected society.

Urban Aging and Inclusive Design Practitioner
Micro-Credential
Program Description:
The "Urban Aging and Inclusive Design" program is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to create inclusive and supportive environments for everyone, but specifically for aging populations.
This program caters to urban planners, community developers, healthcare professionals, policy makers, architects, engineers, and individuals from diverse fields who are committed to shaping communities that enhance the well-being of people of all ages. Participants will gain knowledge on topics such as universal design principles, community engagement strategies, healthcare integration, and policy advocacy specific to age-friendly initiatives.
Through a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical case studies, and hands-on projects, learners will gain the expertise needed to address the unique opportunities and challenges posed by an aging demographic. This micro-credential emphasizes the importance of technology and innovation, evaluates the impact of age-friendly interventions, and encourages a holistic approach to community development.
Those who complete this micro-credential will emerge as individuals capable of contributing to the creation of vibrant, accessible, and inclusive communities that meet the evolving needs of diverse age groups.

Micro-Course Offerings:
Course 1: Infrastructure and Environment Design
Understanding the needs of an aging demographic is essential for ensuring that communities are prepared to provide the necessary infrastructure, services, and care. This knowledge is also vital for addressing the unique opportunities and challenges presented by this demographic shift, such as the increasing demand for age-friendly housing, transportation, and public spaces. This course is meticulously crafted to empower you with the knowledge and skills to design and evaluate environments that support aging populations.
Course 2: Social Inclusion and Community Engagement
Designing age-friendly programs, advocating for supportive policies, and leading community efforts are essential to ensure older adults age with dignity and participate fully in community life Therefore, this course focuses on social participation, combating isolation, fostering respect and inclusivity, and addressing ageism. This course also covers employment opportunities and barriers for older adults, principles for age-friendly workplaces, and effective communication strategies for professionals.
Course 3: Healthcare Integration and Well-being
Understanding how life stages and biological, social, and environmental factors affect health is key to a holistic view of well-being. Communities can use this insight to shape inclusive policies that meet diverse needs across the lifespan. Addressing health inequalities and focusing on preventable factors in older adults allows for more effective, targeted interventions. Promoting mental health, managing chronic illness, and encouraging preventive behaviours are vital to an age-friendly health system—contributing to a healthier, more inclusive community for all.
Course 4: Policy Advocacy and Implementation
In this course, you will learn about the integrated process of policy-making, how to be an effective advocate and the need to work with other stakeholders. You will gain a better understanding of the challenges and prospects associated with the formation of age-friendly communities by studying real-world examples. You will also be empowered to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of older people and to effect positive change.

Admission Requirements
The successful completion of an Additional Qualification (AQ) or Additional Basic Qualification (ABQ) course at Laurentian University grants you an official transcript. However, the registration of this qualification on your Certificate of Qualification and Registration (license) is governed exclusively by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).
Fundamental Requirement for ABQ Registration:
In accordance with Ontario Regulation 176/10, you must mandatorily hold a postsecondary degree of at least three years from a recognized institution for the OCT to register an ABQ on your file.
- If you do not hold this degree, the OCT will not recognize the qualification, even if you successfully completed the course.
Conditions for Holders of a Transitional Certificate:
Members holding a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration are eligible to take AQ courses. However, they must be members in good standing and holders of a non-transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration before the end of the course for the qualification to be added to their certificate.
- If this condition is not met before the end of the course, the College will consider the AQ to have been taken for personal professional development purposes, and it will not be registered on the certificate.

Your registration becomes official only when the required documentation has been received and you have paid your tuition. Otherwise your registration will be considered as professional development and may not appear on your OCT profile.
AQ Courses - Part 1 Admission Requirement
- ✅ Good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) or OCT applicant if you are a new Ontario BEd. graduate.
Note: Members holding a Transitional Certificate of Qualification are eligible to enroll in AQ courses. However, they must have a Certificate of Qualification and Registration before completing the AQ course for it to be listed on their certificate.
Members not holding a Certificate of Qualification and Registration by the end of the AQ course will be considered by the College to have taken the course for personal learning purposes. The AQ course will never appear on the member’s Certificate of Qualification and Registration.

Record Evaluation for ABQs (Intermediate and Senior Divisions Only)
To register for our Additional Basic Qualifications courses, you must follow these steps:
- You must submit a copy of your university/college transcript that includes your first degree to determine if you are eligible. Please send copies to qba-evaluations@laurentian.ca.
- Please indicate the desired course, your OCT number, and your phone number in your message.
Important: If you are determined eligible, you will be asked to complete your registration using our portal. If you register for an ABQ course without having your transcript evaluated, you may be asked to withdraw your registration.
Additional Basic Qualification Requirements for the Intermediate Division
- ✅ Good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) or OCT applicant if you are a new Ontario BEd. graduate.
- ✅ 12 credits in the field of study.
Additional Basic Qualification Requirements for the Senior Division
- ✅ Good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) or OCT applicant if you are a new Ontario BEd. graduate.
- ✅ 18 credits in the field of study.

Micro-Course 1: Fundamentals of Writing Grants (10 hours)
This course on the fundamentals of grant-writing will provide learners with comprehensive knowledge of writing grant applications. Beginning with information on types of grants and the current grant climate, the course will continue with the importance of preparation, the need for persuasive techniques and explanations of the parts of the grant application and how to approach them. As the course proceeds, learners will complete exercises to increase their understanding of the grant application process. Emphasis throughout will be on writing applications that strive for the perfection necessary to their success.
Micro-Course 2: Building on Basics: The Grant Cycle (20 hours)
Providing funding through grants is one of the primary ways that government and private sector foundations achieve their strategic priorities - working with academic researchers and community organizations to support their work and drive results. With so many different organizations and individuals competing for funding, it’s important to write strong, impactful funding proposals that clearly communicate why your project is the most impactful, and the most likely to achieve the funder’s desired result. This course will build on the basics of Fundamentals of Writing Grant Applications to show how comprehensive writing and budgeting, clear alignment with priorities, and strong communication and reporting with funders can be used to make your proposal the most successful one.

Survey Skills: From Design to Analysis
This series of courses supports employees, supervisors, business owners and students as they learn how to design surveys and questions that generate reliable data. Successful completion of this course will result in knowing best practices in designing surveys, including ethics, and privacy as well as analyzing and evaluating the results of surveys.
Micro-Course Offerings:
Micro-course #1: Effective Survey Design (5 hours)
This series of courses supports employees, supervisors, business owners and students as they learn how to design surveys and questions that generate reliable data.
Micro-course #2: Introduction to Statistical Analysis (10 hours)
Surveys are created for many different reasons – to see what people think about an individual (e.g. a political candidate) or a product (e.g. a new frozen food), or to describe people in terms of their characteristics (e.g., are they cooperative, friendly, or creative? Are they good at mathematics or language?). If you have created a survey and you plan to use it, you need to be sure that it is a good, solid survey. If a survey does not live up to the criteria discussed in this course, you will be doing more harm than good by using it.

Growing Microgreens at Home
Micro-Credential
Through exploring a variety of scientific and community resources, as well as practical exercises, this course: enhances curiosity and confidence about growing microgreens, improves access to nutrient dense foods, promotes a greater understanding of biological principles and shares knowledge about fundamental concepts of functional nutrition.
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

End-of-Life Doula
Micro-Credential
This non-credit micro-credential program is open to individuals looking to pursue a career as an End-of-Life Doula. Upon completion of this program learners will be trained to care for someone and their loved ones holistically during end of life. Learners will be able to support someone during the end of life period as well as support family and friends after a loved one has passed. Learners will be able to empower, and educate those experiencing loss while supporting them through the decision making process.
At the end of the program, learners will be able to:
- describe the role and responsibilities of the End of Life Doula;
- demonstrate effective communication skills and etiquette;
- understand the complexities of grief;
- understand ethical and legal issues relating to end of life care including funeral practices.
Micro-Course Offerings:
Micro-Course 1: Introduction to End of Life (20 hours)
This course will examine the role of an End-of-Life Doula including but not limited to their scope of practice and role within the community.
Micro-Course 2: Understanding and Navigating Grief (30 hours)
This course will examine the definitions of grief, and mourning as well as misconceptions surrounding the dying process.
Micro-Course 3: Cultural Practices at the End of Life (20 hours)
Explore a broad range of viewpoints pertaining to the concept of death and delve into the implications of cultural factors and their role in shaping individual attitudes and societal practices. Simultaneously, engage in an examination of personal beliefs, recognizing their interplay with broader cultural and societal constructs. Consider innovative care approaches in the field of end-of-life care as well as unconventional funeral practices, such as green burials or other eco-friendly options, in order to broaden the horizon of possibilities for commemorating departed loved ones.
Micro-Course 4: End of Life Doula (need to complete Introduction to End of Life) (30 hours)
This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills needed for end-of-life doula care, focusing on important ethical considerations, holistic approaches, and community engagement. Learners will be able to navigate ethical issues, provide comprehensive support that honors the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of the dying, and build strong community networks to support individuals and their families during the final chapter of life.

Introduction to Behaviour Change
Micro-Credential
This series focuses on conceptual foundations of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) techniques. Explore the broad utility of this data-driven behavioural science across diverse fields and populations. With a focus on ethical and effective treatment, learn the “how to” of assessments, data collection, graphical representation, teaching new skills, and replacing problem behaviour. This series will explain ABA terminology and methodology and will prepare you to apply these strategies for your own personal behaviour change goals or for the application with others under the direction and ongoing supervision of a Registered Behaviour Analyst.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), covering fundamental concepts, principles, and applications. Students will explore the basics of behaviour, the core principles of ABA, and the various applications of ABA in different settings. The course also includes an overview of the professionals working within the field of ABA and the ethical framework that helps to ensure quality practice and individual's rights.
Course 2: Assessment and Behaviour Measurement (Measurement, Assessment and Strategies)
ABA intervention is data-driven. This course provides an overview of assessment and data collection in ABA, emphasizing ethical and effective practice. It equips the learner with the knowledge how to collect accurate data and how to represent data graphically for easy analysis.
Course 3: Behaviour Reduction and Skill Acquisition (Behaviour Reduction and Intervention)
This course provides an in-depth exploration of behaviour reduction and skill acquisition procedures within Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Behaviour reduction focuses on strategies to decrease the frequency, intensity, or duration of inappropriate behaviours, which may be disruptive, harmful, or interfere with an individual's learning and daily functioning. Skill acquisition involves systematically teaching new skills to replace maladaptive behaviours and enhance the individual's ability to function effectively and independently.
