Laurentian University Appoints Distinguished Alumnus and Indigenous Leader Kristan Straub as New Chancellor
Laurentian University is proud to announce the appointment of Kristan Straub as its next Chancellor.
(March 26, 2026) – Laurentian University is proud to announce the appointment of Kristan Straub as its next Chancellor. A visionary bilingual leader and a champion for Indigenous economic sovereignty, Mr. Straub brings a deep personal and professional connection to the University, embodying its unique tricultural mandate.
Mr. Straub’s relationship with Laurentian spans generations. An alumnus himself (Hon. B.Sc. Geology ‘98), he is the grandson of Art and Eva Solomon, who were instrumental in founding the federated Native Studies Program. His ties to the campus are literal and symbolic; at age twelve, he helped his grandfather construct the Apology Cairn on campus, a monument commemorating the United Church’s apology to First Nations people and a landmark of reconciliation.
"Kristan Straub is the ideal choice to lead Laurentian into its next chapter," said Dr. Lynn Wells, President and Vice-Chancellor of Laurentian University. "His life and career reflect the very essence of our University’s mission: a profound commitment to bilingualism, and the promotion of Indigenous cultures, paired with a drive for innovation that serves Northern Ontario and the world. From his student days to his international leadership roles, Kristan has always been a bridge-builder. We are honoured to have him serve as our third chancellor."
Mr. Straub currently serves as the inaugural President and CEO of the Canadian Indigenous Loans Guarantee Corporation, managing a $10-billion federal program to support Indigenous equity ownership in major economic projects. His career includes executive roles at Wyloo and Glencore Nickel, where he led the renegotiation of the Raglan Impacts and Benefits Agreement. A proud band member of Henvey Inlet and French River No. 13 First Nation and a fluent French speaker, Mr. Straub embodies the diversity of the Laurentian University community.
"Returning to Laurentian in this capacity is a deeply moving full-circle moment for me and my family," said Kristan Straub. "This university was the site of my grandfather's advocacy and my own education, and today it is where my children are building their futures. I am eager to advocate for our students and to help unlock the vast potential of the diverse communities across Northern Ontario. Together, we will continue to champion the values of stewardship, reconciliation, and tricultural excellence that make Laurentian a leader on the global stage."
The appointment follows a rigorous national search conducted by a diverse selection committee representing students, faculty, staff, and community partners. He follows in the footsteps of past chancellors Aline Chrétien (2010-2013) and Steve Paikin (2013-2021). Mr. Straub, who received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Laurentian in June 2025, will officially begin his term following a formal installation ceremony this spring.
