(October 29, 2025) - Laurentian University’s Work Study program offers students financial assistance alongside opportunities to build professional experience. Its flexible, part-time structure supports a balanced approach to work, study, and personal growth.
This opportunity has given many students the chance to learn more about their future career and the functioning of the university. Two Laurentian University students that are part of the Work Study program share what the program means to them and how it has helped them in their academic journey.
Ashleigh Leung
Ashleigh Leung is in her fourth year in the Bachelor of Architectural Studies program at Laurentian University. “The Work Study program has enriched my studies in architecture by exposing me to the business and project management side of the profession” Ashleigh states when asking how the Work Study program helped with her studies and future career goals. She is especially proud of her contribution to the Maamwizing Research Institute (MRI). Where she was tasked with creating detailed renderings to envision what the space will look like so it can help the project develop.
Ashleigh is able to keep a balanced schedule with prioritizing her academic responsibilities and being part of the Telegraph McEwen School of Architecture Student Magazine while still being able to be part of the Work Study program. Keeping track of all of her commitment in her calendar, she is able to grow academically, professionally and personally. Ashleigh would highly recommend other students to apply to the Work Study program. “From my experience working with Facility Services, a Work Study position is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, understand how an office and construction environment operates, and build lasting professional relationships.”
Amal Nair
Amal Nair is in his third year of the Bachelor of Computer Science at Laurentian University. Growing up in Cochin, India, Amal considers Sudbury like his second home. He started working with the Work Study program in February. Beginning his role in the middle of a semester was a little change of routine but Amal was able to work through the summer which he is grateful for. He began as an office assistant where his tasks would include helping the administrative team, answering phone calls, and writing emails, issuing work orders and other tasks. With this experience Amal was able to help improve the work order system with the help of his supervisor, which is a project that he is particularly proud of.
Amal states that the Work Study program helps him better understand the things he learns in class and how they are put in the context of work. “I'm actually able to see how it all works in real life and how I can translate the course work itself” Amal stated. To balance work, school, and extracurricular activities, Amal also writes everything in a calendar, the key is to stay organized and with the flexibility that Work Study offers, it helps students like Amal to prioritize school. Amal says that the Work Study program is definitely worth applying for. “If you're in school it’s the best option that’s out there” Amal states.
The Work Study program continues to offer Laurentian University students valuable experiences that extend beyond the classroom, preparing them for both academic success and future careers. Students can learn more about the program at the Career Hub.
