AODA Draft

This website is dedicated to information sharing for staff, faculty and students of Laurentian University with regards to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

Laurentian University strives to provide an accessible experience for all students, employees, and visitors. To this end, we are committed to the principles of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). These pieces of provincial legislation work together to ensure accessibility for all Ontarians.

Whereas Ontario’s Human Rights Code requires that we "accommodate to undue hardship" on a case-by-case basis, the AODA takes a proactive approach, requiring that specific standards of accessibility are met. Although the AODA does not currently outline any education-specific standards, The act will soon require that all publicly-funded Universities in Ontario develop short and long-term plans to reduce accessibility barriers. Until all such standards are developed and in force, Laurentian University, like all other organizations with one or more employees in Ontario, is required to meet all existing accessibility standards outlined in the AODA, and to address any accessibility barriers that may be present for students, employees and community members.
