Harquail School of Earth Sciences

The Best Place in the World to Study Geology

The Harquail School of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University is Canada’s premier institution for education and research in ore deposits and Precambrian geosciences.

Laurentian University’s Harquail School of Earth Sciences is located in Sudbury, Canada. Our proximity to active and historic mines, connections with industry, and access to a wide range of geological environments provide unparalleled opportunities for graduate education and research in ore deposits, structural geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology, and geophysics.

We’re located in a special place on Earth, with access to a rich variety of Archean and Proterozoic mineralization types, including magmatic copper nickel sulphide, volcanogenic copper-zinc massive sulphide, intrusion related and orogenic gold, and polymetallic silver-cobalt ore systems. Major mining communities from Red Lake to Timmins and from Kirkland Lake to Noranda are all within reach.

Situated on the rim of one of the world’s oldest, largest, and best-exposed meteorite impact sites and on rocks of the Canadian Shield, we live, work, study, and learn in a natural geological laboratory. We invite you to explore our campus and join the Sudbury geoscience community.
