To the student who has accepted an offer from Laurentian:
Congratulations, and welcome to the Voyageur family! So you’ve accepted your offer, excellent choice in my opinion. I was in your shoes around this time last year, as I am in my first year of the nursing program. Let me tell you, I’ve never been happier than with my decision to attend Laurentian. For starters the small class sizes have allowed me to form relationships with professors that simply wouldn’t be possible if I was attending a post-secondary institution with a much larger population.
I’m sure you have many questions about Laurentian, so hopefully I can answer a few for you. Here’s a few tips to make the most of your experience:
- Don’t be afraid to seek guidance, there are so many resources available for students.
- Get involved with clubs, it’s a fun way to meet new people and some positions are even paid!
- Take advantage of your access to facilities such as the gym, pool, library and the student center.
- Figure out where your classes will be before purchasing your parking pass, some lots are closer to certain buildings than others.
- Stay on top of your assignments, it’ll cause your stress levels to remain manageable.
- Have fun and participate in events happening on campus!
In my first semester I got involved in the Laurentian University Nursing Student Association (LUNSA) and it was a great opportunity to have a say in what is happening with my program. I also joined the Liaison Services department which gave me the opportunity to work at events, such as our open houses! I am a Sudbury local, therefore I commute to and from school everyday but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the opportunity to participate in all the events happening on campus. Laurentian makes it possible for students living on or off campus to get the full experience.
The campus is surrounded by 5 lakes, lots of hiking trails, walking distance from Bell Park and the boardwalk, and is only seven minutes from the downtown core! With everything so close to campus you’ll have a hard time finding nothing to do at Laurentian. Also if you are going to be living on campus, the transit system runs right through the campus so transportation won’t be an issue. I’m so happy I became a Voyageur and I have no doubt you will be too!
Laurentian can’t wait to have you.
James Munro, SPAD
Hello and welcome to the Voyageurs family!
I’m sure you’re excited and eager to begin the next stage of your life here at Laurentian University. As a present-day Sports Administration student, currently completing my first year, I would love to offer some knowledge on what makes Sports Administration one of Laurentian’s most unique programs. As well as to offer insight into the next steps to take before beginning University this Fall.
As a Varsity Lacrosse player, I’ve felt right at home coming into the Sports Administration program and am always met with warm greetings from upper year students. This program is the perfect choice for those like me, with a passion for sports as well as an interest in business. Sports Administration offers numerous student-led events including watching larger sporting events such as the super bowl, Thursday Jersey days or “Jersdays” for short and many more allowing you to reach out and make lasting bonds in this friendly environment. You can follow our Instagram page at “laurentian_spad” if you would like to see a little bit more about these events that you’ll have the chance to participate in.
In first year, the academic focus is on more general knowledge and people skills. In your first year Global Sports courses you will get the chance to engage with the class on interesting case studies while learning new and relevant skills for the workforce. Classroom engagement like this can be attributed to Laurentian’s smaller class size and the hard work of our committed Sports Administration faculty. Another highlight of the first year is the improvisation seminars hosted by Bill Sanders, a local actor/comedian. There you will learn how to comfortably speak in front of a class and really develop your presentation skills. In the upper years, you will get the opportunity to put your knowledge to the test with Internships, consulting projects and even hosting a local hockey tournament.
As for school events, look out for events such as orientation week advertised on flyers across the school or on the SGA Instagram at “sga.age” and keep up to date with what’s going on. Laurentian University is a beautiful campus with unlimited possibilities. We offer tons of intramural activities, an Olympic sized pool to swim in with free swims available during the week and lots of trails to explore and run in your leisure time. Laurentian offers tons of events each week with something new always taking place in the Parker Atrium. I love going out to catch a Basketball or Hockey game and supporting the teams while showing my Laurentian pride. Laurentian also offers many clubs and teams to join and I’m sure they will have one for you, regardless of your interests. At the end of the day University is what you make it. Put yourself out there and seek opportunities and you will be making lasting memories while getting a great education.
I hope to see you around campus and at some of the Sports Administration events.
Second Year
Manishma Ray, Architecture
Congratulations on accepting your offer to the Architectural Studies program at Laurentian University!
I am a second-year Architecture student and I am also an international student from Dubai.
I hope you are excited to join us at the McEwen School of Architecture where we offer a hands-on learning experience throughout the four years of our undergraduate program. We focus on building for a northern climate through learning about local materials and timber construction. During your time here, through the offered courses, you will have the opportunity to learn about design, sacred architecture, building for climate change and much more!
The architecture building is situated separately from the main Laurentian campus, giving us the opportunity to explore and venture into Sudbury frequently. Being located downtown, we get to build connections to the city center. Furthermore, our program includes two 14-week co-op placements during the summer after first and third year. In first year, you will get to design and build a seating station in your studio group, which is then put around a skate path on Ramsey Lake. We also work on various projects where we get to learn about indigenous architecture and methods of building structures.
Although this undergraduate program primarily prepares you towards the masters program to complete the professional program in architecture (M.Arch), there are numerous employment opportunities in the field of design for BAS students: including but not limited to, urban planning, industrial design, community development, ecology, etc.
Additionally, you would also get to spend time on campus for elective classes and you can also choose to live on residence. There are a lot of fun things to do on campus such as clubs for sports and various other interests. With the recent inauguration of the new Student Center on campus, we now have more recreational and study spaces for students. We also have regular activities planned on residence which serves as a great way to make friends outside of the architecture program.
Sudbury has a lot of hidden gems around town and you would be in the center of it all! My friends and I love to go to cafes and there are many local businesses to explore. There is a board game café right across the street from the school of Architecture and the transit terminal is about a 7-minute walk away, linking you to the bus anywhere in town.
Welcome to Laurentian University; it has been a wonderful time for me so far and I can’t wait to see you here!
- Manishma Ray.
Third Year
Lauren Ashleigh, BBA
Congratulations on accepting your offer to complete your Bachelor of Business Administration here at Laurentian University! You are in for an exciting and challenging four years, where you will learn in a close-knit community and in small class sizes. The average class size at Laurentian is 27 students. Small classes allow for greater interaction between students and professors, this provides a substantial advantage for students if they require references for prospective jobs or even when they apply for graduate studies.
During your first year, you are able to experience a variety of courses throughout a vast range of specializations offered to students within the business administration program. At Laurentian we have degree options in: Bachelor of Business Administration, finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, international management, accounting, human resource management and operations.
Throughout your time at Laurentian, you have the option of completing an internship or even a Co-op. These placements are amazing opportunities that allow you to apply your knowledge in a practical setting. Additionally, the networking opportunities are incredible. You will develop contacts with individuals which will allow you to further develop your knowledge and professional connections. As a result, many students who complete placements are often offered full-time employment upon graduation.
There are countless career opportunities for students who complete their Bachelor of Business Administration. Whether you are interested in becoming the next CEO of a large corporation or you want to establish and manage your own business, Laurentian provides you with the knowledge that you need to be successful.
Besides studying and attending lectures, there is always something to do on campus. I recommend visiting the club’s day held every semester. This event highlights all the clubs we have on campus. We have lots of clubs such as Jack.org Laurentian, Laurentian Relay for Life, Laurentian University Accounting Organization, Students Offering Support and LU We Charity. We also have various opportunities that allow students to work on campus in different departments such as Liaison Services, The Center for Academic Excellence, The Campus Bookstore and SGA/AEF. You can also take advantage of our 35 km of Nordic skiing and hiking trails, large gym with a rock-climbing wall, Olympic sized swimming pool, and even our beach on campus, where you can rent canoes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards!
I volunteer for Swimming with a Mission (SWAM). SWAM provides one-on-one swimming lessons to children with special needs. Sudbury has 330 lakes, so it is imperative that every child has access to swimming lessons. It is such a rewarding experience watching and helping these children develop their swimming abilities and knowledge surrounding water safety.
I look forward to seeing you on campus, enjoy your first steps into university!
Fourth Year
Brianna Tersigni, Criminology
Hello and welcome!
First off, I would like to congratulate you on accepting your offer to the Criminology program here at LU! Secondly, I would like to welcome you to Laurentian, you are in for an exciting four years! During your time here at LU you will meet an array of new and amazing people and professors as well as discover newfound interests and create new goals.
In your first year in the criminology program you will take very general sociology courses as criminology is a branch of sociology. These intro courses will allow you to firstly, learn about what sociology is and how the study of criminology is related. It will also show you a glimpse of the various areas in criminology that you can study and focus on as you progress through the program. Second year, your course selection begins to get more precise. You will be choosing which courses you feel interest you the most and which ones will benefit you and your goals. I recommend trying many different courses all talking about different aspects of criminology. This way, you will step out of your comfort zone and maybe discover a topic area that you love that you would not have otherwise. As you progress through third and fourth year, you are choosing courses that are more specific and cater to your desired area of the program.
There are various different avenues that you could go on with a degree in criminology. For example, I would like to follow a career in law enforcement after I graduate, however, this is not your only option. You could go to law school, pursue a career in corrections, etc… so many possibilities! Being in this program I have come across various opportunities for employment relating to my field of interest as a student. For instance, I work as a Student Border Services Officer which is a law enforcement employment opportunity for students whose primary area of study is criminology.
Looking forward to seeing you next semester!
Graduated
Amanda Dorado, Health Promotion
Hey there!
Welcome to the Human Kinetics family! I’m a Health Promotion student here at Laurentian and I’m super excited for your journey as a Voyageur to begin!
The small class sizes have allowed me to get to know everyone in my program and my professors too. Knowing my professors has especially been really important for academic opportunities and graduate school applications so make sure you say hello to them and ask questions! One of my favourite fun experiences has been Outdoor School 3 where we went on a three-day portaging adventure out in the woods! I’ve also had the opportunity to use lab equipment for things such as VO2max tests and body composition measurement in our hydrostatic tank.
Outside of the classroom, there’s lots to get involved in including residence events, intramural sports, volunteer groups, outdoor trails and clubs. I went to a club fair at the beginning of my first semester and got involved right away. First, I joined S.W.A.M which stands for Swimming With A Mission. We teach swimming lessons to kids with disabilities every Sunday. I also joined the Residence Life team as a Peer Mentor and the School of the Environment Association too. Lastly, I joined RAZ (Reach, Acces, Zhibbi), an interprofessional student-run group running health promotion workshops within the community. I’m so thankful for all of these groups and I honestly wish I had joined more just because I learned so many things that the classroom doesn’t always teach! I also have made some great friends I hope to have for a long time after I graduate and I’m sure you’ll find those one-of-a-kind friends too.
When I’m not doing school-work or getting involved in the campus community, I especially love going for hikes on the trails behind campus in the Fall, when the colours of the trees and lakes are beautiful. I also can’t forget to mention the skating path on Ramsey Lake. Coming from down South, the fact that lakes could actually freeze over blew my mind!! But don’t let the cold scare you. Staying active outside keeps you warm. Not an outdoorsy person? Make sure you try Musical Bingo at La Fromagerie, take a trip to Science North or try Axe throwing! Although I’ll be graduated by the time you arrive at LU, I know there’s going to be a huge support system waiting for you. All the best in your future studies!!
Darby, Sports Psychology
CONGRATULATIONS!
We are very excited that you have accepted an offer to Laurentian University in Sport Psychology! WELCOME TO THE FAMILY! Personally, I took an undergrad in Sport psychology with a minor in Biology and I absolutely loved my experience here at LU. I even decided to stay and complete my bachelor of education degree here! Laurentian University is the only school in Canada to offer a full specialized undergrad program in the realm of sport psychology, team dynamics and mental training, with the possibility of doing internships and studies directly with athletes along the way. This program is perfect for you if you are looking into a career as an athlete, as a coach, as a teacher or any other career working with athletes or teams. We can’t wait to have you!
At Laurentian you dive into the mind of an athlete as you take courses that prepare you to be a professional leader in exercise and sport psychology. You have a lot of flexibility with this degree, taking courses in physical education as well as general psychology. You also have enough electives to do a minor or a teachable in another area of expertise, like I did with biology. In your first year you will take courses such as exercise science, human movement, anatomy as well as an introduction to psychology. In your upper years, you will take more specialized courses in mental training, stress management, social psychology, sports in society and human development and physical activity. You have a lot of options in your fourth year to do practical placements, a thesis or an independent study to gain experience working directly with local athletes.
There are many opportunities for a career following graduation, including but not limited to: a sport psychology consultant, a coach, a teacher/educator, a motivational coach, an applied sport psychology consultant as well as the potential to continue your studies specializing in a master's program or doctorate.
Laurentian University is located in the great city of Sudbury, voted the happiest city of Canada in 2015. Sudbury is a beautiful outdoor-based community with plenty of hiking, nature and fun. During my time in Sudbury I played on the varsity basketball team for two years as well as volunteered with the Cognitive Health Psychology Lab, with Let’s talk science as well as with the Student Life Mentoring Centre. I also worked in student recruitment through Liaison Services. Furthermore, during my fourth year I was able to work directly with a high school basketball team as a coach and with a local basketball club team on team dynamic principals. There are many opportunities for work and volunteering within our Laurentian community.
Remember, being a great athlete or coach does not only require great physical attributes and skills, but also a mastery of the mental game. Come explore all Laurentian has to offer and start your career in the realm of sport psychology with our wonderful undergraduate program! See you soon!
Jamie Southward, Biomedical Biology
Welcome!
I am very excited to hear you have accepted your offer to Laurentian University for Biomedical Biology. What you can expect upon accepting your offer is our new program of First-Year Campus Coaches. You have the option to be paired with an FYCC to help you transition into the first year. Your FYCC is an upper-year student at Laurentian who is paired to you based on your program! This way, any questions about residence, services, program information and just about anything you may be curious about at Laurentian, you can ask! The welcoming atmosphere here at Laurentian made my transition from high school a breeze. I have had the pleasure for the last 3 years to be a part of this volunteer program and pay it forward to the warm welcome I got in my first year!
Here at Laurentian for biomedical biology, you have a choice in the courses and education you receive. After the mandatory 1st and 2nd-year general courses, you are allowed to customize your degree to what suits you. For example, if you love biology, take advanced genetics, animal histology or forensic anatomy in your upper years. If you find out you love chemistry, take organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry! The list of options is endless to complete your degree. Another advantage of this is that some of these courses crossover with other programs, only giving you more connections in the future. I loved my brain and behaviour course where in our labs we got to dissect real rats’ brains!
With our small class sizes, use it to your advantage! Professors are always looking for students to help in their research projects or even helping instruct laboratory sessions for classes. Many of our students become teaching assistants or TA’s in their upper-year on courses they’ve already completed. For me, working with Liaison and volunteering with campus events has only developed my skills and allowed me to show my Voyageur pride!
Moving away to University was a scary thing for me, especially not knowing anyone who goes to Laurentian and living 4 hours away from home. However, I was welcomed by a supportive residence team who understands what students are undergoing and guides them through this transition. The residence team and other clubs have multiple events on and around campus like our welcome week activities, varsity pep rally, puppy rooms during exams, and so much more. The majority of Laurentian events are put on by students, for students!
Laurentian University is a diverse community full of many opportunities for any students’ interests. If you have a love for sports, check out our many varsities, recreation and intramural sports teams during the week for students, or even try our drop-in yoga sessions!
Don’t forget to bring your blue and yellow voyageur pride!
