June 29, 2026 – Laurentian University is breaking down barriers to higher education through Laurentian Online, delivering a flexible, inclusive educational ecosystem tailored to today’s busy learners.

For many students, accessibility goes far beyond physical campus design—it is a matter of geography, time, and socio-economic reality. Laurentian’s asynchronous online programs successfully dismantle traditional hurdles for those balancing full-time careers, remote locations, or complex caregiving dynamics, ensuring higher education is within reach for everyone.

Democratizing Education Through Asynchronous Learning

The journey of Béatrice, an Ottawa resident and Bachelor of Social Work student, highlights this shift. After in-person classes at another university clashed with her daytime work hours, she found her solution at Laurentian.

"Being able to complete my program online changed everything," says Lefebvre-Laflamme, a full-time healthcare worker. "I can study during evenings and weekends while prioritizing my career. Maintaining a stable income while accelerating my degree is a massive advantage."

In Hamilton, Sarah Ferguson shares a similar reality. Studying Gerontology with a minor in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Ferguson balances a healthcare job, a home business, and caregiving roles for her family.

"Laurentian has allowed me to pursue my degree at my own pace from my home office," Ferguson shares. "Achieving this degree will open up leadership opportunities that would be impossible otherwise. The flexibility has been pivotal to my success."

Universal Design for Learning: Built-In Accessibility

Behind these success stories is a team of 11 full-time professionals at Laurentian Online. Instructional designers work closely with professors to build courses based on Universal Design for Learning principles, ensuring content is engaging and accessible.

"Our role is to eliminate barriers before a student ever clicks into a classroom," explains Sarah Bouchard, an Instructional Designer at Laurentian. "We design content to be consumed in multiple ways—whether reading, using interactive modules with instant feedback, or participating in discussion boards. What helps an individual with accessibility needs also benefits a student studying on their bus commute."

"We are giving working professionals, individuals in remote communities, and caregivers the opportunity to advance their careers without sacrificing their livelihoods," says Stephanie Fortier, Manager of Laurentian Online. "Our distance programs ensure that high-quality education is available to anyone, anywhere."
