About

Vale Living with Lakes Centre

Our Vision and Mission

We are an internationally recognized research centre where collaboration across disciplines drives
actionable freshwater science.

We will work together to investigate and understand the connections between land, water and the life that depends on them, and to support sustainable resource management at the local, provincial and national scales.

We will be leaders in environmental and organizational sustainability in our approach to research, training, education and engagement activities.

Research Priorities

Our research supports “Resilience in the Face of Environmental Change.”

Research themes will focus on:

1) identifying and understanding current and emerging threats to aquatic biodiversity and renewable resources,
2) quantifying impacts of multiple stressors on ecosystem function and services,
3) assessing interventions to mitigate impacts,
4) anticipating future trajectories of change and promoting resilient environments,
5) knowledge translation, building capacity and community engagement.

These research themes will inform conservation and management actions, shape policy, and engage communities in biodiversity protection.

Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit

The Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit (Co-op Unit), housed within the Vale Living With Lakes Centre, was established in 1989 and is a unique and successful partnership between Laurentian University, government partners and industry collaborators.

Staff

Our dynamic team is made up of researchers, faculty and staff who work to make this facility a centre of excellence for the protection, restoration, and responsible development of northern aquatic ecosystems.

Environmental Sustainability Committee

As a student-led committee advised by faculty, the ESC takes on projects around campus to help nature recover for the sake of our community.

Laurentian University and the ESC pledged on Earth Day 2023 to protect and support the prioritization of nature restoration within the Sudbury community to become Nature Positive.

Being a Nature Positive University means restoring species and ecosystems that have been harmed by the impacts of a university and its activities and enhancing the university’s positive impacts on nature. This refers to everything a university does, from its teaching and research work to community outreach surrounding nature.
