(July 21, 2025) – Building on their history of productive partnerships, Cambrian College and Laurentian University have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will provide future students with the training needed for careers in environmental sciences. The agreement formalizes a unique collaboration that enables the creation of a new four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Environmental Solutions program offered at Laurentian University, which will integrate completion of a graduate certificate at Cambrian College.

Students enrolled in the BSc in Environmental Solutions will complete years one, two and four at Laurentian University, while their third year will be spent at Cambrian College completing the Environmental Control Graduate Certificate program. Upon graduation, students will earn both a Laurentian University BSc and a Cambrian College Graduate Certificate, preparing them with the academic and applied skills needed for today’s environmental challenges.

“This collaboration represents the best of what our institutions can offer when we work together,” said Janice Clarke, Vice-President Academic at Cambrian College. “Students gain practical, hands-on learning experiences that complement their academic studies, preparing them for successful careers in the environmental field.”

“We’re excited to partner with Cambrian College on this innovative and meaningful initiative,” said Dr. Malcolm M. Campbell, Provost and Vice-President Academic at Laurentian University. “This program leverages the strengths of both institutions and reinforces our shared commitment to environmental stewardship, student success, workforce readiness, and graduate employment.”

The program’s curriculum was built in consultation with industry leaders, public sector partners, and subject matter experts. This unique process builds a strong foundation for this new academic offering.

“Our industry needs more talented professionals who can combine practical experiences and theory. It was a pleasure to be part of the group that helped this program take shape and I’ll look forward to working with graduates of the program.” said Kati McCartney, Chief Operating Officer at Blue Heron Environmental.

“This is a win for Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario as both the public and private sectors will benefit from an influx of graduates to keep up with the demand for expertise in environmental solutions. Having them study in Northern Ontario will enable them to more quickly understand our unique environmental landscape, and aligns with our talent attraction goals as well,” said Richard Picard, Chair of the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation Board of Directors.

Open to domestic undergraduate students, the program offers guaranteed admission to Cambrian’s Environmental Control program for Laurentian students who meet academic requirements. A joint committee—The Collaborative Environmental Solutions Program Committee—will oversee the program’s quality and coordination, ensuring a seamless and supportive experience for students.

This partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration in supporting the economic and environmental health of the North, while providing students with the tools and credentials they need to make a lasting impact.
