The Language Learning Center (LLC) at Laurentian University is proud to offer the English Language Program (ELP) through the Micro-credential and Non-credit Programming department.
The English Language Programming features two distinct pathways:
- Pathway 1: English as a Second Language (ESL) individual language courses.
- Pathway 2: English for Academic Preparation (EAP) a new redesigned level 3 language course.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
Our ESL courses are open to students, staff and community members looking to improve their English. Grounded in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), our comprehensive curriculum guides learners from a beginner (A1) to an upper-intermediate (B2) and advanced proficiency levels (C1-C2) in English. Through a communicative approach and experienced instruction, we equip you with the practical English abilities and confidence necessary for successful communication in everyday life, academic pursuits, and professional environments.

This comprehensive curriculum guides learners from a beginner (A1) to an upper-intermediate (B2) and advanced proficiency levels (C1-C2) in English.

- Any individual over 18 wishing to learn English
Note: You must be at an A2 level to register for the first course, and at a B1 level to register for the second course.

OSAP
Most of our offerings are eligible for OSAP. For more information, visit the OSAP website or contact the Financial Aid office at financialaid@laurentian.ca.
Note: You must be registered for the course in order to be considered for OSAP funding.

A full refund will be given to the student who withdraws prior to the start of the course. No refunds will be given past the course start date.

NCESLAN-1020EL: Intermediate English Development 1 (B1)
Course Description:
This course develops learners’ ability to communicate confidently in everyday and familiar contexts by expressing opinions, sharing experiences, and participating in simple interviews. Students will improve their listening skills to understand main ideas and details in clear spoken language and media. They will also learn to read and interpret structured texts, identifying key information and making basic inferences. Writing tasks focus on composing informal emails, short essays, and personal descriptions to effectively share ideas and experiences. The course aligns with CEFR B1 level, preparing learners for practical communication in personal and social settings.

Course Description:
This course develops learners' ability to communicate confidently and effectively in a variety of contexts. Students will enhance their skills in expressing and supporting opinions, participating in detailed discussions, and delivering clear presentations. The course also focuses on understanding complex spoken and written texts, making inferences, and analyzing arguments. Learners will practice producing well-organized, purpose-driven writing suitable for personal, academic, and professional settings, while adapting language to different audiences and purposes in line with CEFR B2 level.

English for Academic Preparation (EAP)
The objective of the English for Academic Preparation (EAP) level 3 course is to help you elevate your English proficiency, study habits, and research skills to successfully progress to an English-language academic program at Laurentian University. This one-level program for upper intermediate learners is designed for students who are accepted into an academic program but do not yet meet the language requirements to study in that program.
The course will prepare students to function as self-directed learners, critical thinkers, and responsible collaborators within the context of authentic, ethical, and integrous academic conduct. To that end, the EAP programs familiarize international students with Western education norms and Laurentian University’s academic requirements.
The program is composed of two academic streams based on language testing scores and proficiency.

This course prepares students for academic studies in English.
Who Should Attend:
- Any student admitted to Laurentian University who has to fulfill an English-language requirement
Note: Students must be at a C1 level to take EAP level 3, and must submit an approved English Language test to be considered.
