(July 2, 2026) - The Laurentian University Board of Governors is pleased to announce two key leadership appointments: Kristin Murray has been appointed as a new Governor, and Catharine Farrow has been elected as the new Board Vice-Chair.
"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Kristin to the Board and to see Catharine step into the role of Vice-Chair," said Barbeau. "Both of these leaders bring an exceptional depth of experience, vision, and dedication to our mission. I look forward to working alongside them as we continue to serve the Laurentian University community."
Since joining the Board in June 2025, Farrow has demonstrated thoughtful leadership and a strong commitment to Laurentian University. She brings extensive governance experience through her service on the boards of several publicly traded companies, significant executive leadership experience in the global mining sector, and a distinguished academic background, including a PhD in Earth Sciences. Farrow also has a longstanding connection to Laurentian University, having served as an Adjunct Professor for 25 years, Chair of the MERC Advisory Board, and a member of the Goodman School of Mines Advisory Board.
Murray joins the Board while serving as the City Councillor for Timmins (Ward 5) and Executive Director of Kunuwanimano Child and Family Services. A member of Chapleau Cree First Nation and a Laurentian University alumna of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion program, Murray brings extensive executive leadership experience in the child and family services sector, along with a strong record of public service, community leadership, and organizational governance. Her professional and volunteer contributions demonstrate a deep commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and the well-being of Northern communities.
The Board extended its deepest gratitude to outgoing members André Guay and Laura Kurkimaki, who have successfully completed their terms. Their years of dedicated service, insightful guidance, and commitment have left a lasting impact on the organization.
Laurentian remains committed to strong governance practices, including effective leadership transitions that ensure both continuity and renewal. These changes reflect the institution’s focus on collaboration, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
