Dr. Kerry McGannon is a Full Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences. Her core research themes are: 1) the socio-cultural investigation of sport/exercise and 2) advancing qualitative methodologies in Sport Psychology and Sport Sociology. This work centres intersecting identities (e.g., race, sexual orientation, (dis)ability, gender, age) in relation to discrimination and privilege, in sport/physical activity spaces. She also studies the media as a cultural site in the context of identity, sport participation, gender equity, and health.
This research has been supported by grants as Principal and Co-Investigator from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Social Sciences Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme, International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH).
Dr. McGannon and her research team are currently undertaking a critical exploration of digital media sources, in relation to motherhood and elite sport. This project is funded through an Insight Grant, from SSHRC for the project titled Expanding Understanding of Motherhood and Sport in Socio-Cultural Context: A Narrative Analysis of Stories in the Digital Landscape.
