Laurentian University Celebrates Success of Intercultural Ride Along & Job Shadow Partnership with Greater Sudbury Police Service
(April 2, 2026) – Laurentian University is proud to celebrate the successful conclusion of the 2025–26 Intercultural Ride Along & Job Shadow Program, a collaborative initiative designed to support and integrate international newcomers into the Greater Sudbury community.
Delivered in partnership with the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario-Employment and Immigrant Services, Cambrian College, and Collège Boréal, the program provides international students and newcomers with a unique window into Canadian society. Participants are given the opportunity to ride along with officers and explore various roles within the police service, gaining firsthand insight into the standards of safety and law enforcement in their new home.
The initiative is deeply rooted in the GSPS RICH values—Respect, Inclusivity, Courage, and Honesty—principles that resonate with Laurentian’s own commitment to fostering a diverse and welcoming campus environment. By participating, students are able to build meaningful connections with local law enforcement, helping to dispel myths and build a foundation of mutual trust.
“We are proud of the student experience we offer, which extends beyond the classroom. We are dedicated to ensuring our international students feel supported, safe, and truly at home in Greater Sudbury,” said Dr. Lynn Wells, President and Vice-Chancellor of Laurentian University. “We are grateful to the Greater Sudbury Police Service for their leadership in this program. This partnership allows our students to engage with the community in a profound way, turning what can be an overwhelming transition into an empowering experience of connection and belonging.”
The University also recognizes the vital role played by internal staff in making these opportunities accessible to the student body.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to our International Student Services team,” continued Dr. Wells. “They are the frontline of our efforts to ensure every international student thrives here.”
Laurentian University remains committed to working alongside its community partners to create an inclusive environment where all residents, regardless of their country of origin, feel valued and protected.
