Professor Charbonneau's research examines the international politics of African conflicts, African conflict management and peacekeeping and peacebuilding interventionism in Francophone Africa, notably in Côte d’Ivoire and Mali where he has done fieldwork. He is presently working on the militarizing aftermath of the French intervention in Mali and the "war against terrorism" for the West African region. He is at work establishing a transnational and tri-continental research network on the international and regional dynamics of peace, security and conflict in West Africa with partners from the West Africa Institute (Cap Verde), University of Porstmouth (UK) Bonn University (Germany), and the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA).

La recherche du Professeur Charbonneau examine la politique internationale des conflits africains, de la gestion des conflits en Afrique et des interventions de maintien de la paix et de consolidation de la paix en Afrique francophone, notamment en Côte d'Ivoire et au Mali où il a poursuivit ses recherches. Présentement, il travaille sur les conséquences de l'intervention militaire française au Mali et de la "guerre contre le terrorisme" pour la région de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Il travaille aussi à établir un réseau transnational de recherches sur les dynamiques régionales de la paix et de la sécurité en Afrique de l'Ouest, en collaboration avec l'Institut de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (Cabo Verde),
