Biography

Dr. Mateus Pepinelli has an extensive background in entomology, specializing in the systematics, biology, and ecology of aquatic insects, as well as in honey bee ecology and environmental DNA (eDNA). From 2019 to 2023, Mateus managed the BeeCSI project, a Genome Canada Large-Scale Applied Research initiative aimed at identifying stressor-specific biomarkers in honey bees across Canada. Now at Laurentian University, he continues to explore the challenges honey bees face, particularly the effects of climate change on plant flowering patterns and the subsequent impacts on plant-pollinator interactions. Mateus is committed to collaborating with researchers, students, beekeepers, and the community, to develop a long-term eDNA survey project. This initiative aims to document changes in plant-pollinator networks across a latitudinal gradient from Southern to Northern Ontario.

Mateus will also be conducting research at Laurentian University using eDNA techniques to investigate biting flies, specifically focusing on range shifts and monitoring potential vector species. With extensive experience in diverse scientific projects and fieldwork across various countries and ecosystems, Mateus brings a vision of merging traditional and cutting-edge techniques to tackle the complex challenge of understanding, identifying, and describing species interactions in a rapidly changing world.
