Sacred Texts of the Religions of the West

This course examines the historical formation, social function, and literary character of the major religious texts of Judaism, Islam, and Christionity. It introduces the plurality of interpretive strategies developed to construct meaning of these texts throughout their histories. By looking at a variety of interpretive methods, the course explores both the historical and contemporary relevance of these texts to address social, political and ethical issues through a religious lens.
