Responsibilities
Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture, the Mineral Characterization Technologist is responsible for planning, and coordinating all aspects of the laboratory operations. This role involves designing, testing, and implementing sample preparation and instrumental measurement methods to meet both internal research and external client needs while ensuring compliance with Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/QC) protocols and maintaining safe, efficient equipment operation. They serve as the primary point of contact for both internal and external clients and coordinate planning and prioritizing to ensure a smooth and timely workflow. The Mineral Characterization Technologist will provide the necessary guidance and training to staff, students, and external users in the necessary aspects of data acquisition, processing, and reporting. They are responsible for preventive maintenance, repairs, and effective management of laboratory consumables to optimizing performance and minimize downtime. They will oversee financial management, laboratory budget, billing and invoicing for laboratory services and procuring consumables.
Laboratory Operations Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.
- Schedule and coordinate repairs and routine maintenance of equipment.
- Manage inventory, consumables, and procurement to minimize instrument downtime.
Method Development and Quality Assurance/ Quality Control
- Design, test, and implement sample preparation and measurement procedures.
- Establish and enforce QA/QC protocols for all laboratory processes and equipment.
- Monitor scientific literature and technological advances to continuously improve laboratory methodologies.
Training and Supervision of Staff and Users
- Supervise and train users in the proper use of equipment and adherence to safety standards.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external clients in all matter related to lab access and use of instrumentation.
- Coordinate health and safety training and monitor compliance with laboratory protocols.
Financial and Strategic Management
- Develop and manage the laboratory budget, including invoicing of laboratory services, maintenance supplies, consumables, and repair expenses.
- Provide strategic and tactical direction for laboratory operations, including project management and workflow optimization.
- Maintain records of equipment performance and prepare reports on laboratory activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in Geological Sciences is required.
- An MSc or PhD is considered an asset
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three (3) years relevant work experience.
- Experience in managing an analytical laboratory environment, including sample preparation and instrumental measurement methods.
- Experience in project management.
- Experience in preparing bids for research analysis for external clients.
- Practical training and proficiency in the use of LA-ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS, SEM, and related instrumentation.
- Proficiency in developing and implementing QA/QC protocols and troubleshooting complex laboratory equipment.
- Ability to foresee potential issues and proactively implement preventive measures.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Strong technical and scientific communication skills, with the ability to train and mentor staff effectively; and
- Ability to work fluently, verbal and written, in both official languages, French and English is considered an asset.
THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED AS ONE THAT REQUIRES A DIFFERENT WORK WEEK AND/OR HOURS OF WORK. UPON 4 WEEKS' NOTICE, THE WORK WEEK AND/OR HOURS OF WORK MAY BE CHANGED. THIS MAY INCLUDE EVENINGS AND/OR WEEKEND SHIFTS.
The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
