Bette Gennoe Memorial Bursary (8041038)

Established by Heather and Michael Throssell to recognize Bette Gennoe's dedication to the teaching profession. Bette was born in Cobalt and raised in North Bay. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Kipling, Northern Ontario. Later, she moved to Toronto, married her husband Bill and after the birth of their daughter Bette-Jane continued her successful teaching career, lasting over 30 years. Bette loved helping children and even after retirement she volunteered many hours to help with remedial reading. Throughout her life of 88 years, Bette was a strong, responsible, professional and caring lady who thoroughly enjoyed life and had a strong love of learning herself. This bursary is to be awarded to a student who best represents her ideals and commitment.

This award was established by their children to honor Dr. and Mrs. C.J. Doherty. Dr. Doherty served on the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1960 to 1968 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of law by the University in 1985.

Dr. Robert Williams Scholarship (8011109)

Established by family and friends. Dr. Robert Williams, a retired Calgary surgeon, was 89 years old when he followed in the footsteps of his three granddaughters and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Laurentian University. Dr. Williams embodies the term “lifelong learner”. He got his first degree in general science in 1941 from the University of Alberta and two years later, he graduated with a doctor of medicine. He did postgraduate work in surgery in both Toronto and Edinburgh, Scotland, and then started to practice at the Calgary General Hospital. At the age of 68, Dr. Williams earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.

Established by the John Carl MacIsaac Foundation to recognize Ms. Weaver’s 20 years of outstanding service as a valued board trustee. Ms. Weaver’s accomplished career in law commenced when she was called to the bar in 1951. Her remarkable history of community service was exemplified through the work she did while on Laurentian University's Board of Governors and as a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada. Ms. Weaver mentored many young women through her career and is a true role model and source of inspiration. Ms. Weaver is the namesake of the firm Weaver Simmons LLP, and was the first female lawyer to practice law in Northern Ontario. She was also the first female partner in any law firm in the North.

Professor Jack Young Scholarship (8011194)

Jack Young (1939 to 2017) was a first generation university student who went on to become an Engineering professor. His 40-year career began as a professor of Engineering at Laurentian University and continued as a professor of Survey Science at the University of Toronto. He went on to build a successful Engineering and Land Survey company, and was President of the Ontario Land Surveyors. He was a mentor to many students and enjoyed their success immensely.

E - Don Gibson Memorial Award in Engineering (8041217)

Don was born and raised on the Gibson family farm in Beeton, Ontario. He was drawn to the mining vocation at a young age, and at just 17 years old, he attended Lakehead University and graduated in mining technology. In May of 1967, Don was hired by INCO in the Surveyor’s Department, and in 1977, Don seized the opportunity to attend Laurentian University under the recommendation of past INCO President Jim Ashcroft on an INCO Scholarship and graduated from the Mining Engineering program in 1981.

 He worked at various levels of INCO management in mining operations before retiring in 2010.  After a short-lived retirement, Don began his second career as a Consultant for Vale’s new mine development projects, ending this work in 2019 with the Victor Mine Project. During his 52-year mining career with INCO/CVRD/VALE, Don was a very well-respected professional and mentor to many in the industry.

Don's love of worldwide travel with his wife Linda and friends, combined with his love of nature and the outdoors, contributed to over fifty years as a hobbyist landscape painter. His art pieces hang proudly throughout their home and in the homes of family and friends. For everyone who knew him throughout his career and life, Don has left a legacy of great humor, respected mentorship, and his dedicated love of family and friends.

Dr. Laxman (Lucky) Amaratunga (8041168)

Lucky had a great zest for life, loving entertaining friends and family with his sense of humour, outgoing personality and wonderful smile. He had a great passion for the environment, travel, music and art, as well as for all of the animal companions who kept him company throughout his life. Lucky was a much-loved professor to his students, young and old, and recipient of the Laurentian University Teaching Excellence Award. He was a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM) and a CIM Distinguished Lecturer in his fields of mining, metallurgy and waste processing. He also served as member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) and past-director of the board of the CIM Environmental Society.

Bernie Shami Memorial Bursary (8011207)

Established by the Shami family, the Bernie Shami Organic Chemistry Bursary honours the memory and legacy of Bernie Shami, who completed his degree in Chemistry at Laurentian University in 1976. Following his graduation, Bernie dedicated himself to education, joining Laurentian University as an Organic Chemistry Lab Instructor, where he served until his retirement in 2012. Known for his unwavering dedication to teaching, Bernie always had time for his students, many of whom became his lifelong friends. He was appreciated by them for his friendly manner, his ability to make them feel welcome and supported in the lab, and his love of his subject. Students in his lab were grateful for Bernie’s patience, his ability to explain difficult concepts, and above all, his humour and humanity.

Dr. George and Mary Walker Memorial Scholarship (8011074)

Established in memory of Dr. George Rutherford Walker and Mary Walker. Dr. Walker was a surgeon in the Royal Canadian Navy(1942-44), and Acting P.M.O., HMCS York 1944. He retired as Lt. Col., Canadian Forces in 1970. He had a private practice in Sudbury (1950-1990), was a member of the surgical staff of the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto (1956-1958), and was Chief of Staff at Memorial Hospital (1982-1987). He was a member of the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Founding Board and an author of several medical articles.

Senator Rhéal Bélisle Scholarship (8011036)

Established by friends in honour of the 40th anniversary of Honourable Senator Rheal Belisle's dedication to public service. Mr. Belisle devoted talent, time and energy to his community and country. He served his local community as Town Councillor and Mayor, then the Province as a member of the Legislative Assembly. From 1963 until his death in 1992, he served Canada as a Senator with great distinction and dedication. While he was a member of the Legislature, he guided the process that enabled the incorporation of Laurentian University of Sudbury, and of the University of Sudbury as a federated college.

Calculating your average

For admission and award purposes, Laurentian University calculates admission averages based on the top six final marks from grade 12 or level 4 U/M courses, regardless of prerequisites for the intended program of study. Eligibility for renewal will be based on full-time status in the previous academic year (30 credits of which 24 credits must have been taken in the Fall/Winter term, remaining 6 must be taken in the spring term)

NOTE: Scholarships are paid on a September to May cycle. Amounts will be prorated based on the number of credits per semester.

The “R.L. Beattie Family Award” was created in 2008 by Mr. Allan L. Beattie to honour his late father, Robert Leslie Beattie, who passed away in 1953 at the age of 62. R.L. Beattie arrived in Copper Cliff (now a part of the City of Greater Sudbury) from his father’s Southern Ontario farm in 1911 and took a job as a clerk in the warehouse at INCO. Over the course of his career he rose to be Vice-President, General Manager, and a Director for INCO as well as a Director of the Bank of Toronto and the Toronto General Trust Corporation. He served with the Canadian Forces in the First World War and was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery. His Sudbury legacy includes the R.L. Beattie Public School and the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 224 which was named the R.L. Beattie Branch in his honour. The purpose of this award is to pay tribute to Mr. Beattie while providing financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University.

President's First Generation Bursary (8041256)

Established by Laurentian University’s current President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Lynn Wells, this bursary was created in memory of her father, Roderick Benjamin (Ben) Wells (1932-2021). Ben was born in Wingham, Ontario and was on his own from the age of fourteen, looking after himself as best he could. He did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education or even attend high school, but he was an intelligent, thoughtful person, with a great sense of humour. Ben started working in the General Motors Plant in Windsor, Ontario as a teenager, and after many years on the line, in recognition of his compassionate and fair leadership style he was promoted to Supervisor and eventually General Manager before his retirement. Ben was very proud of his three children, who all succeeded in their post-secondary education. This bursary honours Ben's legacy by supporting first-generation university students so that they can have access to the education that he never had. Jim held the position of Chairman of the Board of Alexander Centre Industries Ltd. (ACIL), Waters and associate companies. Further, he was elected as Director of Canadian Pacific on May 7th, 1986 and continued serving in that capacity through to his successful re-election in April 2000. This bursary was created to provide students with an opportunity to attend university and realize their full potential. It will be awarded to students who may have struggled academically because of financial and personal challenges that have limited their ability to concentrate on their studies. Two awards were created to provide full-time students who demonstrate financial need with an opportunity to attend university and realize their fullest potential. Riley Gallo Memorial Bursary (8011209)

This bursary was established by the Gallo family in loving memory of Riley Gallo a vibrant and joyful child who embraced life with extraordinary courage and tenacity. Riley cherished spending time with his twin brother, Zachary, and his sisters, Kayla and Megan. Even while undergoing treatment, he demonstrated remarkable determination, learning to ride his bicycle without training wheels in just 24 hours. Though his time on earth was brief, Riley’s spirit and love for life continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew him. Marc St. Laurent Memorial Scholarship (8011045)

Former or current youth in the care of the Children’s Aid Society who are pursuing their first postsecondary degree are eligible for a bursary of 2,000 dollars. Students must meet the following conditions:

• Must have been in extended society care in Ontario for a minimum of one year.
• Must apply for funding through full-time or part-time OSAP each academic year.
• Students must self-identify as coming from care through the OSAP application process and provide the supporting documentation.
• Students registered in Part-Time Studies (less than 18 credits) will receive a prorated amount

Priority will be given to first-degree, first-time applicants studying at Laurentian University (collaborative programs are excluded). The bursary is limited to 10 students per academic year. Students must apply by September 1st of each year.  Students will be selected by the number of credits registered in and the total Unmet Need as determined by OSAP. A first disbursement of the bursary will be made during the Fall term, and a second will be made in the Winter term. There is no application required for this bursary; students who meet the above criteria will be considered.

Should bursaries still be available, consideration will be given to students who apply by January 1st for the Winter term, and prorated based on the number of credits taken. The bursary is not available for the Spring term.

Please note: All monies received during the school year (bursaries, scholarships, part-time work, etc.) could reduce your OSAP loan entitlement. This could also convert grant funding to loan funding. Any OSAP overpayment could decrease any future OSAP entitlement. Please contact financialaid@laurentian.ca if you have any questions.

At Laurentian University, we’re committed to helping every student reach their academic potential. The Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) and the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE) provide non-repayable financial assistance to eligible students with disabilities. These programs help offset the extra educational costs that may result from disability-related needs.

Students may receive up to $2,000 through the BSWD and up to $20,000 through the CSG-DSE per academic year for approved expenses.

The Ontario First Generation Bursary (OFGB) recognizes and supports students who are the first in their families to pursue post-secondary education. This bursary is designed to help reduce financial barriers and celebrate your achievement as a first-generation university student.

1. Are a First-Generation Student: Neither parent has attended college or university, anywhere in the world.

The Ontario eSports Scholarship supports high-achieving students pursuing studies related to video gaming and eSports industries. At Laurentian, this scholarship encourages innovation and the development of new talent in one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors.

Eligibility

You may be eligible if you:

1. Are Enrolled in a Relevant Program: Such as Game Design, Game Development, Computer Science (with gaming focus), Digital Media, or Business with a gaming specialization.
2. Maintain Strong Academic Standing: Minimum GPA of 3.0 or 75–80%.
3. Demonstrate Financial Need.
4. Are a Domestic Student (Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person).

The Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship provides financial relief to students affected—directly or indirectly—by the conflict in Ukraine or by other global crises. At Laurentian, we are committed to helping students continue their education despite global adversity.

To be considered, you must:

1. Be Impacted by Conflict: Priority given to those affected by the war in Ukraine, but open to students impacted by other international conflicts.
