Dr. Elizabeth Wenghofer is an academic and researcher specializing in physician performance, medical regulation, physician workforce, and program evaluation. She earned her PhD in Medical Sciences (Health Services Research) from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine (2004) and currently serves as a full professor in the Faculty of Education and Health at Laurentian University. She also holds an appointment in the Division of Human Sciences at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University and is the Research Director for the University of California San Diego Physician Assessment and Clinical Education (PACE) Program. Additionally, Dr. Wenghofer serves on the Medical Council of Canada’s Governance & Nominating Committee and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal for Medical Regulation. Before joining Laurentian University in 2007, she spent over a decade leading research initiatives at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Dr. Wenghofer’s research interests lie in the areas of physician performance & assessment, medical regulation, physician workforce and program evaluation. She has partnered and conducted collaborative work with the Medical Council of Canada, the National Board of Medical Examiners (USA), the Federation of State Medical Boards (USA), the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, multiple provincial medical regulators, and several large physician assessment organizations across the United States. Her current research activities investigate the factors that influence practice performance throughout a physician's career, particularly focusing on understanding the relationships between performance, the practice environment, and continuing competence.
Dr. Wenghofer teaches and supervises graduate students in the Interdisciplinary PhD in Rural and Northern Health and Masters in Interdisciplinary Health.
