About Dean

Dean Millar is Professor of Mining Engineering at Laurentian University's School of Engineering and Computer Sciences and where he leads the Energy, Renewables and Carbon Management (ERCM) research group. He holds a degree in Mining Engineering and a doctorate in Rock Mechanics, both from Imperial College, London. He is a fellow of the Institute of Minerals, Materials and Mining, a Certified Energy Manager and a licenced Professional Engineer.

In 2014/2015 he was nominated Canadian Institute of Mining and Petroleum (CIM) Distinguished Lecturer, and he is a member of the Executive Board of the CIM’s Maintenance, Engineering and Reliability society. He was formerly Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Architecture at Laurentian and Research Chair for Energy at LU's MIRARCO Mining Innovation. Before that he was Head of Renewable Energy Research at the Camborne School of Mines, and the Head of the Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE) for the University of Exeter.

Currently, Dean and his group at Laurentian progress live research projects on: novel solutions for cooling deep mining operations (including hydraulic air compressors), energy efficient mine ventilation, energy storage systems, energy mapping and management for mining, optimal mine site energy supply, and the integration of renewables in mining. He is totally committed to bringing about carbon descent in mining.
