Carol Kauppi

Carol Kauppi is the Director of the Centre for Research in Social Justice and Policy. She is a professor in the School of Social Work at Laurentian University and she served as the MSW Program Coordinator for several years. Carol is the Director of a multi-year research project, Poverty, Homelessness and Migration in Northern Ontario, a Community-University Research Alliance funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. In 2017, She received the Partnership Award from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

With a team of researchers at Laurentian University and the University of Sudbury, Carol is leading several research projects on homelessness in 2018 in northeastern Ontario. As the Director of the multi-year research project, Poverty, Homelessness and Migration in Northern Ontario, Carol has worked with an interdisciplinary team of researchers at Laurentian University, the University of Sudbury, Nipissing University, Université de Sudbury and Western University. Previously, Carol conducted a multi‑year study on homelessness with the Social Planning Council of Sudbury, working with a network of more than 30 organizations serving poor and homeless people in Sudbury. In 2009, she completed a study of migratory and transient homelessness in Sudbury. She has published many articles and reports dealing with homelessness and housing, racism, family issues, young mothers, parenting, postpartum depression, and child and family poverty in Sudbury and northern Ontario.

In addition to poverty and homelessness, her primary research interests have included girlhood, adolescence, and motherhood in northern communities. Between 2003 and 2008, Carol completed a multi-year, province-wide and national project on girlhood. As part of this project she co-edited and published an anthology of girls creative writing and art, girlSpoken: from pen, brush and tongue, as well as a facilitators guide for teachers and service providers. The girlSpoken book received an award from the Amelia Bloomer Project which is sponsored by the Feminist Task Force of the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association. From 1997 to 2001, Carol was the director of the 3.5-year Cybermoms project, a research and demonstration project that developed and studied a computer-mediated peer support model for teenage mothers.
