Mr. Thomson was a librarian at Laurentian since 1975, retiring in 2021. On top of the three years he spent at the University of Saskatchewan, he had over 49 years experience. When he retired, he was responsible for English Language Library Instruction, the Institutional Repository LUZoneLU, Interlibrary Loan, Films, Distance Education Library Services, Reference, Collection Development for the Faculties of Education, Health, and Management as well as English Language Secondary School Instruction.
In the community, he has been a member of the Board of the Sudbury-Manitoulin Children's Aid Society on and off since 1986, completing 27 years of service in 2023, 11 of these as Chair. He has also been Chair of COMPASS (formerly the Child and Family Service) and the United Way. Currently he serves on the boards of Meals on Wheels and the Greater Sudbury Public Library. He is also active in the association of retired faculty of Laurentian University.
