Jude Kadri is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Equity, Diversity and Human Rights at Laurentian University. She is a historical materialist political sociologist whose research examines human rights, war and terrorism, hunger, capitalism, imperialism, and political transformations in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Yemen, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya, Iraq, Iran and Syria.
She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Ottawa, where she completed her doctoral research on the historical and political-economic roots of Yemen’s state disintegration. She is the author of Socio-Historical Roots of Yemen’s Collapse (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023), and her forthcoming book, Historical Materialism for the Middle East, will be published by Brill in 2026 as part of the Studies in Anti-Imperialist Marxism series. The book develops a historical materialist approach to the study of political, social, and economic transformations in the Middle East, emphasizing the centrality of capitalism, imperialism, and class relations.
Dr. Kadri has published extensively in the fields of political sociology, historical materialism, war, human rights, and the Middle East. Her current research examines the relationship between capitalism, imperialism, human rights, and contemporary warfare, as well as artificial intelligence, capitalism, and artistic labour. She has received research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and has worked as a researcher and policy advisor with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA), contributing research and policy analysis on Yemen.
A committed educator, Dr. Kadri has taught sociology, political science, political economy, Islam and politics, and equity, diversity and human rights at universities in Canada and internationally. Her teaching emphasizes critical inquiry, dialogue, historical analysis, and the relationship between social theory and contemporary political struggles.
