This course surveys the history of the French Revolution between 1789 and 1799. It deals principally with the origins of the revolution; its outbreak in the spring and summer of 1789; the creation and collapse of the constitutional monarchy; the founding of the first republic; the political, social, and cultural meanings of the Terror; and the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
