This course provides a comprehensive overview of sustainable and responsible mining practices, covering key topics such as Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA), regulatory frameworks for surface and underground mine closure planning, sustainable post-mining land use strategies, mine waste management, and the associated benefits for local and Indigenous communities. As part of the course requirements, students will complete a two-part sustainable mining project involving (1) the application of LCSA using the life cycle assessment software and (2) the development of a strategic mine closure and post-closure plan.
