Mechanical Engineering Design I: Optimal Mechanism Design

Course code: ENGR-2591EL

The fundamentals of mechanical system design are introduced, with a focus on planar mechanisms incorporating linkages, cams, and flywheels. Students apply the engineering design process to develop mechanisms that achieve specified functional requirements. Mechanisms are simulated using software-based models (e.g., MATLAB/SIMULINK) to assess their performance and inform the design process. Optimization algorithms are introduced and applied in the context of the design of mechanisms to achieve design objectives while satisfying design constraints.
