Residence Assistants: Building Community from Day One

September 18, 2026— As students arrived on campus earlier this month for the start of the new academic year, Laurentian University is highlighting the dedicated student leaders who work behind the scenes to make campus feel like home: our Residence Assistants (RAs).
Before the doors opened for Move-In Day, RAs undergo extensive, hands-on training to prepare for supporting incoming and returning students. This training covers critical areas including mental health support, responding to sexual violence on campus, accessibility concerns, campus resources, and participating in the KAIROS Blanket Exercise.
Featured Residence Assistants:
Tiffany Uzamere (Third-Year French Nursing Student & Second-Year RA)
For Ottawa native Tiffany Uzamere, returning for her second year as an RA in the University College residence, the motivation stems from her own experience as a first-year student:
"My RA in first year did such an incredible job bringing us together, and I wanted to bring that same energy to create a community where students are proud of their floor."
Reflecting on the hands-on training RAs complete before doors open, Uzamere highlights the practical scenario exercises as essential preparation:
"Our training was very in-depth. The best part is the practical scenario work where we simulate common situations, work together as a team, and build the confidence needed to support students from day one."
For first-year students navigating the move to campus, Uzamere offers simple advice:
"You’ve entered a brand-new chapter, embrace it! Your RA is basically your tour guide and friend in this experience. We’re here to help you settle in, introduce you to people, and guide you every step of the way."
Grant Petronech (Second-Year Law & Justice Student & First-Year RA)
Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, and a proud student athlete of Laurentian’s lacrosse team, Grant Petronech decided to join the team after watching the positive impact RAs made last year:
"I decided to apply after seeing how much fun everyone had being an RA last year. I’m a very outgoing person and love meeting new people. Being an RA allows me to welcome new students and help make their transition a positive one!"
Reflecting on training week, Petronech notes that team bonding and patience were his biggest takeaways:
"Training was a great experience to bond and build a tight community where we learn to rely on each other. My key takeaway was patience. Moving into residence can be overwhelming for first-year students, and they need our time and patience as they ask questions and settle in."
When it comes to building an inclusive environment, Petronech stresses the value of small, daily interactions:
"Put yourself out there. Everyone is in the same boat, and we get to shape the community together. Whenever you pass someone in the halls, say 'Hi' with a smile, give a compliment, or ask how their day was. These little things count and help everyone feel seen and included."
