(October 9, 2026) - Laurentian University has officially closed its 2025–2026 fiscal year, with the institution continuing to build long-term financial sustainability while fulfilling its obligations under the Exit Loan Agreement with the Province. Audited financial statements for the last fiscal year will be presented to the Board of Governors for approval at its upcoming meeting on October 16.
2025–2026 Year-End Highlights
- Consolidated revenues for the year stood at $238.2 million, against consolidated expenses of $199.2 million.
- Despite a shifting landscape on international student enrolment, a strong increase in domestic undergraduate enrolments helped stabilize operational tuition revenue. The total student population rose to 8,272 individual students.
- Laurentian successfully met all of its financial covenants mandated under its $35-million Exit Loan Agreement with the Province of Ontario.
- The University invested $5.4 million into its multi-year Transformation Program in 2025–2026, delivering 78 major project milestones to modernize campus systems, procurement, and digital student services.
- Excluding one-time revenues of $18.4 million from real estate transactions with the Province, operational revenues exceeded expenses by $20.7 million. Updated since the April estimates, this value includes approximately $7.7 million in additional income from government funding, tuition revenues, research grants, and investment income; and $7.1M in savings due to vacancies, deferred spending, and gain on sale of the designated properties.
2027–2028 Budget Process Now Underway
Building on this foundation, planning for the 2027–2028 fiscal year is officially underway. In September, the Administration consulted with Senate and the Board Finance and Property Committee on a set of budget principles, which will be considered for approval by the Board of Governors at its next meeting. These principles will provide transparent and clear guidance on the allocation of resources for the upcoming budget year.
Consultation and community participation remain essential to a successful budget process. Over the coming weeks, faculty, staff, and students will have multiple opportunities to participate in discussions, review planning updates, and provide feedback.
For more information about the budget process, members of the University community are encouraged to review the budget section on the Laurentian website: https://laurentian.ca/about/policies-accountability/finance
