July 13, 2026 – Laurentian University is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Kimberly Kennedy, a student in the School of Indigenous Relations, who has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious 2026 Sovereignty in Action Award by Indigenous Climate Action. The award recognizes Kennedy’s profound dedication to social justice, grassroots community advocacy, and cultural revitalization.
A member of the Red Rock Indian Band (Lake Helen First Nation) currently situated in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Kennedy is a passionate advocate, published author, and mother. Her work is rooted in the fundamental belief that community-led healing, reconciliation, and climate justice are deeply interconnected and grow from grassroots leadership.
Among her many contributions, Kennedy has played a pivotal role in organizing the annual Red Dress Run in Thunder Bay, a vital community event focusing on advocacy, education, and fostering reconciliation for survivor families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. The event utilizes traditional drumming, dancing, and story work to cultivate healing. Additionally, she actively volunteers with the Feathers of Hope youth initiative and various community-led land stewardship programs.
"As a neurodivergent my journey has been met with many trying paths, and natural disasters, and periods of spiraling out of control in all facets of my human existence," said Kennedy. "My jingle dress allowed me to harness the power within my neurodivergence and contribute community healing."
Reflecting on her academic journey, Kennedy emphasizes the impact of her education in grounding her grassroots efforts.
"Laurentian has been a massive catalyst in helping me sustain this event," she shared. "It would not have been possible without the community and Laurentian equipping me with the skills to facilitate such a meaningful event. Thank you for your role in my journey—I am truly honoured to be a student with Laurentian University."
The Sovereignty in Action Awards, presented by Indigenous Climate Action, honour inspiring individuals carrying forward crucial sovereignty and climate justice work within their respective communities. Kennedy is featured as part of the award's Cohort 1 initiatives.
