June 3, 2026 — For many students, the path to graduation is a straight line. For Alex Kowalski, a graduating student in Laurentian University’s English Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, that path included a life-threatening detour that ultimately defined her calling.

Originally from Kapuskasing, Ontario, Kowalski chose Laurentian to remain close to her Northern roots. However, during her second year, she became severely ill with Lemierre’s Syndrome—a rare, life-threatening bacterial condition. She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Health Sciences North, where she required a ventilator and surgery to survive.

"It was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, both physically and emotionally," Kowalski shares. Despite the crisis, she found a profound support system in Laurentian professors Lauren Andersen and Shirlene Hudyma, who prioritized her health over academic deadlines. "Their kindness made a lasting impact on me, and I will always be grateful for the empathy they showed."

This experience as a patient did not just test her resilience; it deepened her empathy. Inspired by her late grandmother—a respected Registered Nurse—Alex successfully returned to her studies and is set to graduate this June.

In a powerful full-circle moment, Kowalski has accepted a position as a Registered Nurse in the very same Intensive Care Unit where she was once a patient.

"Returning to the unit where I received life-saving care, this time as part of the team, is a full-circle moment for me," she says. "It represents not only professional growth, but also personal healing and closure."

Now approaching convocation, Alex aims to use her voice as a nurse to help ensure that "forgotten diseases" like Lemierre’s Syndrome are recognized early, turning her personal survival into a mission for patient advocacy.
