Mineral Resources Industry Leadership Certificate (MRILC) Program Terms of Reference (ToR)

Purpose of the Program

This program is designed to foster leadership, character development and resource industry stewardship. Our certificate program features a very unique and experiential learning environment and responds directly to the essential skills and knowledge needs indicated by industry employers! The program aims to enhance essential skills, broaden mineral industry knowledge, provide work integrated learning experiences (networking, field trips, mentorship, mock interviews) and promote career advancement in the mineral resources industry.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Requirements: Applicants must 1) be currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution in Canada; OR 2) be currently employed in the mineral resources industry, or a related industry, and hold a secondary (high school) diploma.

Experience: No experience required.

Commitment: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to foster their leadership and character development skills, and to participate in the program to the best of their capabilities. Applicants must commit to completing the 2-year program.

Application Process

Submission Requirements: Applicants must submit a completed application form, along with any required documents (resume, references).

Deadline: All applications must be submitted by the end of the second week of the start of regular classes at Laurentian University (mid-September each year).

Selection Process: Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee based on eligibility, merit, and relevance to program objectives.

Selection Criteria

Merit: Evaluation based on academic achievements, experience, or other relevant accomplishments.

Relevance: How the applicant’s background aligns with the program’s goals.

Motivation: The applicant’s interest in and commitment to the program as demonstrated in their application.

Program Benefits

Training: Participants will receive training in Project Management, Health & Safety, Intercultural Awareness and Gender Equity, Indigenous Awareness, Canadian Mining Industry best practices and regulations, networking, mentorship, and many experiential learning opportunities.

Resources: Access to program resources will be provided through Laurentian University’s Desire to Learn program (D2L) and through the MRILC program coordinator.

Certification/Completion: Participants who meet the program requirements (min 75% GPA) will receive a Laurentian University Mineral Resources Industry Leadership Certificate. Participants who show extraordinary commitment to the program and who score >85% in the program will be recognized as Falcon Leader Graduates of the MRILC program.

Program Expectations

Payment: Successful applicants must pay the program’s yearly tuition fee; $599+HST (students) and $2,599+HST (Industry).

  • Payment Method: The payment will be disbursed directly to the educational institution or as agreed upon, in installments or as a lump sum.
  • Due date: Second Friday in October (yearly), or as agreed upon, in installments or as a lump sum.
  • Drop out date: November 30th (yearly). Participants must contact the program coordinator before this date to receive a full refund.
  • Attendance: Participants are expected to attend all scheduled activities.

Participation: Active participation in all program components is strongly encouraged.

Completion: Participants must complete all assignments and projects to successfully finish the program.

Termination and Withdrawal

Termination: The program may terminate the participation of individuals who do not meet performance, attendance, or conduct standards.

Withdrawal: Participants who wish to withdraw must provide written notice to the program coordinator. A refund will be issued only if requested before the yearly drop out date (November 30th).
