Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Rights and Responsibilities, the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Support Coordinator is charged with assisting with the response to disclosures of sexual violence on campus by providing confidential guidance, support, information and resources to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence; supporting students involved with processes under the Policy on Response and Prevention of Sexual Violence and/or the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, including providing referrals to resources and following up as appropriate to assist with academic, housing and other considerations; developing, coordinating and facilitating training and education to build awareness of consent culture and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence on campus; engaging with partners in the community to provide referrals and to collaborate on initiatives relating to sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response.

Coordination of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response

  • Acts as a point of contact for disclosures of gender-based and sexual violence in non-emergency situations under the Policy on Response and Prevention of Sexual Violence.
  • Provides appropriate and confidential support and advice to members of the Laurentian University community who disclose sexual and gender-based violence or who have concerns related to sexual violence.
  • Provides timely and appropriate support and information to survivors of possible options for disclosures and/or complaints, including referral to case resolution process.
  • Facilitates connection to, and coordination of, campus and community resources for supporting survivors.
  • Supports accommodation processes for students impacted by gender based and sexual violence including, but not limited to, academic, residence, and financial.
  • Ensures that the University’s response to disclosures of sexual and gender-based violence is timely and adheres to the Policy.
  • Follows up with survivors to ensure the survivor is being appropriately supported, including during case resolution processes.
  • Brings stakeholders together to identify appropriate, proactive and preventative action on sexual and gender-based violence by identifying barriers to comprehensive, survivor-led university responses to disclosures of sexual violence and recommending solutions.

Student Support

  • Facilitate supporting to students involved with processes under the Policy on Response and Prevention of Sexual Violence and/or the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities including providing referrals to resources and following up as appropriate to assist with academic, housing and other considerations.
  • Follow up to address any ongoing needs of the student in order to mitigate risk and ensure appropriate support is in place.

Training and Education

  • Leads educational initiatives to help build awareness of consent culture and creating an inclusive, welcoming and supportive environment for all our students, staff and faculty.
  • Create social media content aimed at engaging Laurentian community members in topics related to consent and sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response.
  • Develops and disseminates resources related to support and prevention for gender-based and sexual violence.
  • Develops, coordinates and facilitates awareness campaigns and customized workshops for faculty, staff and students.
  • Offers comprehensive trauma-informed group programming for those impacted by gender-based and sexual violence.
  • Partners with stakeholders across campus, including, but not limited to, Student Success, Campus Safety, Residence Life, International Student Services and athletics to raise awareness of sexual violence response & prevention and work collaboratively on prevention strategies.
  • Participates as a member of relevant committees to address prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence on campus.
  • Researches best practices in sexual violence education in the post-secondary sector, and applies best practices in developing and facilitating educational programming on campus.
  • Collects and analyzes data, trends, and prepares reporting and identifies recommendations to inform sexual violence prevention and response.
  • Regular, but limited, supervision, training, or directing the work assignments of a small number of students, part-time or temporary workers. The nature of supervision is largely confined to scheduling work and assigning tasks. Supervision at this level typically does not include a full range of supervisory responsibilities, and supervisory duties typically do not consume a large portion of the work day.

Community Outreach

  • Develops and maintains relationships with on and off campus support resources in the Greater Sudbury community.
  • Works with community partners to provide referrals for survivors in the community.
  • Engages with partners in the community, including other post-secondary institutions, to collaborate on initiatives related to sexual and gender-based violence prevention on campus.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Social Work, Psychology, Gender and Sexuality Studies, etc.). A Master’s or Professional Degree, or a professional designation, is considered an asset
  • At least three (3) years of directly related experience in providing advocacy and support to individuals, preferably to survivors of sexual violence and other forms of gender-based violence, or commensurate experience.
  • Experience in program planning and development, including training and awareness programs, preferably with a focus on sexual and gender-based violence prevention.
  • Strong communication, decision making skills and sound judgement
  • Excellent knowledge of University policies and procedures that address the response and prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.
  • In depth familiarity with on and off-campus resources.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of human rights and intersectional sexual and gender-based violence issues that arise in a university setting
  • Ability to confidently handle sensitive situations with confidentiality and empathy
  • The ability to manage and complete tasks in a timely manner and the ability to maintain accurate records and files is required.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • The ability to develop knowledge of other cultures, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
  • Understanding and familiarity with intersectional, anti-oppressive and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of Indigenous and disability-related issues and their intersection(s) with other identities including race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, etc.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software applications, as well as Internet research capabilities.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Strong organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Ability to evaluate effectiveness of training plan and make recommendations for change.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
  • Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
