Northern and Rural Community Safety Symposium
Tuesday, August 26, 2025 - 8:30 AM to 4:45 PM
Laurentian University - 935 Ramsey Lake Rd,
Sudbury, ON (Fraser Building)
Welcome to the 1st Biennial Northern and Rural Community Safety Symposium!
This one-day tricultural event brings together researchers, practitioners, community stakeholders, and those with lived experience to discuss and exchange knowledge, challenges, experiences, research findings, and perceptions on northern and rural community safety (NRCS). Northern and rural communities have unique safety concerns compared to urban areas, and the geographical and social differences make responses particularly complex.
Community consultation has led to the identification of three primary themes:
- Sex Trafficking
- Intimate Partner Violence
- Mental Health and Addiction
This symposium is meant to respond to the intricate nature of NRCS and bring academics and community stakeholders together, which we hope will be the first step in a collective effort to respond to community safety in northern and rural communities. We anticipate the relationships, experiences, and knowledge fostered by the symposium can be leveraged to produce collaborative and community-based innovations and responses.
This is your chance to share, learn from, or engage with experiences of community safety! Please mark your calendars and register for the event through the Eventbrite link above.

Want to be involved?
We are offering a call for presentation proposals for our academic panel or community report:
- Academic Panel: You can apply for our academic panel to showcase your proposed, ongoing, or completed research. Presenters are required to provide a 10-15 minute presentation on one of our three topic areas.
- Community Report: If you are a community leader or represent a non-profit organization, we encourage you to share the challenges, successes, and/or mitigations experienced within your community or organization. This is an excellent opportunity to leverage expert knowledge to find mitigations to community or organizational issues, to share your successful projects that others can learn from, or to provide a general overview of how the topic area is impacting your community.
Proposals need to align with one of our three thematic areas: Sex Trafficking, Intimate Partner Violence, or Mental Health and Addiction.
You are welcome to apply to present on more than a single panel.
For further inquires, or to submit a presentation proposal/abstract (250 words maximum), please email Dr. Jordan Babando at jx_babando@laurentian.ca.
