Laurentian University aims to promote the mental well-being of all students, staff & faculty to create an inclusive and supportive environment, and to ensure that everyone has access to the resources and support they need to thrive academically, professionally and personally. In addition to the Student Mental Health Policy, Laurentian University has also made a commitment to the Okanagan Charter.

Laurentian University Mental Health Supports

The Accessibility Services Office offers support for students with many types of disabilities so they can participate in all aspects of their academic experience at Laurentian University. We are offering in person, telephone or virtual (video conference) appointments.

The Coordination, Assessment, Response, and Education (CARE) Team at Laurentian University is a multidisciplinary team from student services focused on supporting students experiencing mental health and/or behavioral challenges. This multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to identify students of concern, assess potential risks, and develop tailored interventions aimed at helping students overcome obstacles to their success.

Through a compassionate and proactive approach, the CARE Team strives to ensure students receive the appropriate resources and support, ultimately promoting their well-being, academic success, and personal growth while minimizing risk. The team coordinates with various campus departments to provide a comprehensive and effective response to individual needs.

Our counsellors listen and work with you to address personal issues and mental health concerns that may be interfering with your success as a student. We offer a range of services to promote effective learning, growth and personal development.

  • If you are experiencing a situation where you need urgent assistance but do not have a scheduled appointment, counsellors will be available for same-day appointments Monday to Friday, between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Laurentian’s Campus Emergency Response Team is a student-led initiative available to respond to any medical issue on the Sudbury Campus. Volunteers are all Laurentian students and trained at a First Responder level with CPR HCP. LUCERT has partnered with security to assist in any emergency on campus. The team aims to enhance safety in partnership with all available services at Laurentian currently and also provide students with another way to become involved in the school community. LUCERT can also cover events affiliated with Laurentian, by contacting us at our email. They are also joined with Laurentian’s SafeWalk and aim to ensure everyone’s safety while at the university.

Our Health and Wellness Services serve as your on-campus medical clinic to look after your health-care needs. Registered nurse and nurse practitioner are on staff during regular office hours, part time physicians are available by appointment and urgent cases are also accepted.

The Indigenous Student Affairs team strives to ensure a positive learning environment in a manner consistent with the Indigenous worldview. It is our intention to increase accessibility and retention, as well as enhance the academic experience of students of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit ancestry at Laurentian University. Whether you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed with managing your course load or struggling to write an essay or a report, the peers are available to assist you in overcoming a range of academic and wellness challenges.

The Peer Coaches are here to offer students the inside track on anything pertaining to Laurentian. For information on how to register for courses, how to get a parking pass and student card, who to contact for transcripts, and everything in between, our Peer Coaches are available to answer all student general inquiries.

Peer Academic Program

The Peer Academic team offers one-on-one support to students who require assistance with developing learning strategies and essential skills needed to achieve their academic goals. Upper-year peers will identify and develop strategies to assist students in areas such as: Reading comprehension and critical thinking, Research tools and source citing, Essay and report writing, Meaningful note-taking and exam preparation, Time management, work prioritization, and more.

Peer Wellness Program

Offering one-on-one, confidential wellness support, trained Peer Wellness Specialists provide a welcome and safe space for all Laurentian students seeking mental health and wellness support. The Peer Wellness Program promotes mental health awareness, provides access to wellness support resources, and hosts a full calendar of events designed to assist students in taking time to nurture their mental well-being.

Laurentian Pride is a resource center for the queer community and just one of many student services offered on campus. Resources, education and adxvocacy that support Laurentian Pride are contributed by partners such as LU’s Health and Wellness Services, Sudbury Pride, Réseau Access Network and Black Lives Matter Sudbury. In affiliation with the Equity, Diversity, and Human Rights office, Laurentian Pride student volunteers host many exciting events while also providing a safe space for all. Coming together recently as a team, an entire week of events on campus was dedicated to goals of equity, diversity and inclusion.

RéU and its team support Laurentian students and families in need with access to resources, clothing and household items at no cost.Our free store, through donations and contributions of Laurentian community members, aims to encourage resiliency and self-sufficiency through workshops, resource referrals and assistance with basic needs.

The Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline is a confidential, multilingual service, operating 24/7 to connect victims and survivors with social services, law enforcement, and emergency services, as well as receive tips from the public.The hotline uses a victim-centered approach when connecting human trafficking victims and survivors with local emergency, transition, and/or long-term supports and services across the country, as well as connecting callers to law enforcement where appropriate.

Off-Campus Counselling Supports

Canadian Mental Health Association Sudbury/Manitoulin provide services to individuals with mental health issues or a diagnosis of a mental illness (though it is not required) within the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts. Our purpose is to support healthy people and communities through advocacy and the provision of safe, inclusive and accessible mental health and substance use services.

The Central Intake and Referral Coordination (CIRC) program is the entry point to the Mental Health and Addictions programs. When you call the CIRC team, they will provide a brief screening and take you through a standard intake process to help determine which services are best suited to meet your needs. Our team can also provide you with general information and referrals to programs and services in our community.

Centre Victoria pour femmes is a nonprofit and charitable organization serving francophone women who are fighting against all forms of violence. We offer individual and group counselling, supportive care and referral to other services and representation. Prevention, awareness and education are also at the heart of our intervention, and are integrated into all the means used to prevent and abolish violence against women. Our services are offered primarily to francophone women aged 16 and over in the Greater Sudbury and Algoma regions.

The Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIPP) and the Voices for Women Sudbury Sexual Assault Centre (VFW) provide a diverse array of services for survivors of violence. We believe an inclusive world of shared power, where everyone lives freely without fear of violence is possible. Our trauma informed team is here to support you or your loved one in a way that is compassionate and non-judgemental. Receiving care is confidential and available with or without police involvement. We strive to ensure that everyone will have safe access to the care they need.
