Meet the Peer Academic Specialists

Darren O'Brien

Program:

Chemical Engineering

I come from:

Sudbury, ON

I speak:

English and French

Specialties:

Writing; Note-Taking; Time Management

What drew me to become a Peer Academic Specialist:

I found that, whenever I would lend a hand to peers in my program, I would always learn something from the experience. Not only did I feel great about helping somebody learn, but I would improve my own learning. Teaching truly is the best way to learn.

I never go to class without:

Pen and Paper - I’m old school :)

I never sit down to study without:

A clean and organized workspace

Best advice I’ve ever received:

Don’t let criticism grind you down - use it to push yourself to prove ‘em wrong!

What I wish I’d known on the first day of university:

First time around - Take it seriously; this is important!

Second time around - Don’t take it so seriously; you got this!

My academic “a-ha moment”:

If I work hard, stay focused, and live life well, I will actually succeed at this; it’s really possible!

Dorcas Compaore

Program:

Criminology

I come from:

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

I speak:

French, English

Specialties:

Organization/Planification, Writing, Communication, Problem-solving

What drew me to become a Peer Academic Specialist:

My motivation to become a Peer Academic Specialist stems from my own lack of access to support during my studies. I aim to leverage my experiences and knowledge to assist fellow students facing similar challenges, as I believe that academic support is crucial for fostering an environment where everyone feels encouraged and supported.

I never go to class without:

My laptop

I never sit down to study without:

Music, notebook, and Marker Pen

Best advice I’ve ever received:

Do not try to follow the mass, always be yourself

What I wish I’d known on the first day of university:

Avoid procrastination at all costs

My academic “a-ha moment”:

Realizing the importance of organization and consistently keeping up with classes. Regularly reviewing the material helped to better absorb the information and feel more confident during exams. It really made a difference in how to approach studying.
