Full-Time Term Appointment: eight (8) months contract 

THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED AS ONE THAT MAY REQUIRE A DIFFERENT WORK WEEK AND/OR HOURS OF WORK. , The current Schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (summer hours), or Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (winter hours).  Upon four weeks’ notice, the work week and/or hours of work may be changed.  (This may include evening and/or weekend shifts.)

Responsibilities

The Library Clerk supports the successful operations of the Education Resource Centre/Centre de ressource en Éducation (ERC/CRÉ) and will provide courteous, efficient and bilingual library services, and perform tasks associated with maintaining and promoting the library collection.

Reporting to the Manager of Operations, the successful candidate will:

  • Deliver exceptional customer service, performing circulation duties such as checking library materials in and out;
  • Providing assistance to library patrons on the utilization of library resources and information systems, and work independently to resolve incoming requests, inquiries and issues; help students to find the various resources needed for assignments;
  • Maintain the collection of materials and resources including shelving, shelf reading, inventory, etc., and assist with processing and repair of library materials;
  • Maintain library public areas in a clean and orderly fashion by maintaining orderly shelves, refilling displays and performing light cleaning and/or organizing tasks, and communicating with building facility services about issues requiring attention;
  • Perform opening and closing duties of the ERC/CRÉ according to procedures;
  • Ensure circulation of student resources in the Library Management system, Omni, (book loans and returns, late fines);
  • Work proficiently with computer software and the Omni program specifically;
  • Assist patrons with computer use, printing and photocopying, troubleshoot basic problems;
  • Perform an annual inventory at the end of the academic year;
  • Prepare relevant signs and communications for the ERC/CRÉ;
  • Offer guidance to Student Assistants and Work-Study Students to ensure consistency in practice and exceptional customer service;
  • Maintain the stock of library and office supplies;
  • Receive, sort and distribute mail; mail out of interlibrary loans; emptying and processing book drop boxes;
  • Answer telephone, messages and email inquiries;
  • Assist at the Library Service Counter at both the J.N. Desmarais Library and the McEwen School of Architecture Library downtown, while the ERC/CRÉ is closed, as well as providing vacation coverage at the McEwen School of  Architecture Library as needed ;
  • Remain up to date with technology, policies, procedures, resources and professional development through communication with manager, co-workers, library website, training opportunities, etc.
  • Assist with special projects, events, etc. ;
  • Perform other related duties as required. 

Qualifications

  • Requires two years post-secondary level education and/or prior library work experience (circulation, book preparation and repairs, etc.).
  • Have 1-3 years of experience in customer service.
  • Experience in an academic library setting would be an asset (in a school or postsecondary setting).
  • Ability to work in both official languages, French and English, for all aspects of work is required.
  • Computer proficiency and knowledge of Gmail, Google Workspace, Microsoft Suite, Internet, etc., and ability to learn specialized computer applications.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team and to meet deadlines.
  • Good organizational skills, and strong attention to details. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to provide timely information to library patrons.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records.
  • Must have the ability to travel to different library sites, on campus and downtown.
  • Ability to work day shift, and flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends shifts.

This means the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are paused at this time; however, they are not canceled and could be reinstated at a future date if public health conditions warrant it, or through guidance from federal, provincial or local public health authorities. The evolution of the virus and the course of the disease activity are difficult to predict and it may be necessary to reinstate the Policy in full or in part, on short notice. When the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are paused, persons entering Laurentian’s campus will no longer be required to provide proof of vaccination in order to attend campus.
