French Studies
The Department of French Studies offers a general B.A. (3 years) and a specialized B.A. (4 years) in Études françaises, an excellent academic preparation in French language, linguistics and literature.
Admission requirements (Grade 12 4U/M):
• 1 français
• 5 other courses
• minimum average of 70%
The Bachelor of Arts in Études françaises focusses on developing French as a first language. In first year, all students must take LANG 1005 (Grammaire appliquée à la redaction).
The program also includes an introduction to literature, and French, Quebec, Franco-Ontarian and Francophone literature courses, as well as an introduction to linguistics, and a wide array of courses in various areas of linguistics and sociolinguistics.

French as a Second Language
Placement testing (online) is mandatory for admission to a French as a Second Language program, to determine candidates’ language competency and ensure they are placed in appropriate courses.
The 3-year program leads to a Bachelor of Arts (general) in French while the 4-year program leads to a Bachelor of Arts (specialized) in French. Both are geared to students whose mother tongue is not French.
All French program courses focus on French literature, language, linguistics and culture.
