The Maamwizing: a hub for Indigenous community driven research project (SSHRC RGDI), through the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute at Laurentian University have an exciting opportunity to join their team as an Intern: Maamwizing Research Projects Coordinator. This is a Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Internship arrangement, and the successful candidate must reside or be willing to relocate to Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. This opportunity is solely on-campus and in-person for the full 52 weeks.

Summary
The Maamwizing: a hub for Indigenous community driven research project is led by algonquin anicinabe ikwe: Dr. Joey-Lynn Wabie, and driven by two local anishinaabe community partners: akinomooshin wigwam, inc., & White Buffalo Road Healing Lodge, Inc. These organizations are dedicated to Indigenous resurgence, or the reconnecting of Indigenous peoples with their own knowledges, governance, languages, ceremonies, relationships, and lands, thereby addressing the systems and impacts of racism and colonialism as they impact Indigenous peoples. Our collective focus is on the application and evaluation of the 7 Pointed Star Hub Model which is an Anishnaabe, culturally based and supportive framework for community engagement, planning, and research sharing practices; which are grounded in the principles of Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, Love, Wisdom, and Truth.

The Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute brings together researchers to pursue research that embraces Indigenous worldviews, provides a decolonial critique, privileges the voices of Indigenous communities, benefits Indigenous peoples and develops Indigenous peoples as researchers. The Institute aims to create an academic environment that will promote research excellence; contribute to the advanced training of graduate students; develop new research expertise and enhance the research productivity of its members; establish collaborations with researchers inside and outside the Laurentian Federation, and with community partners; and support researchers in aligning their research initiatives with identified community needs.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an intern to: (1) learn about coordinating research projects within the academic institution; (2) receive mentorship through an associate professor and affiliated faculty and staff members associated with the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute; and (3) work alongside Indigenous community organizations, including akinoomoshin wigwam and White Buffalo Road Healing Lodge, on their research goals. The skills development opportunity within this internship will provide the successful candidate with the ability to understand Indigenous community engagement, planning, and research sharing practices. This internship involves the use of a model applied in community to test its usefulness and gain feedback from its users to validate and/or modify it for repeated use from other researchers. This model will solve the practical problem of harmful research conducted by unknowing but well-intentioned researchers wishing to work with Indigenous communities. The intern will implement the model with the supervisor and learn how to test models, evaluate, adjust, and present them to the larger public for their use.

The Maamwizing Research Projects Coordinator will report to the project lead.
