It’s difficult to choose your university after high school, especially when you want to go to another country, because it involves a double task, which is to choose a country and then choose a university in the country. The questions to ask are: "What would this country bring me more than others?" "Why this university and not another?"
In my case, the answers to these questions led me to choose Canada and Laurentian University.
Coming from a French-speaking African country, I was looking for a university that would allow me to study in French, which I found at Laurentian. Only, I found the bilingualism was so interesting that I decided to continue my studies in English.
Since many professors are bilingual, it is very easy to meet them in person to explain a course that we have not understood, and they are very attentive and understanding of language issues that international students may have.
Moreover, since there are many other international students at the university, you don’t feel totally out of place at first. We meet many other students from the same country as us, and together we can discover the new culture.
My integration was quite easy, I made many friends from Canada and elsewhere and very quickly I even joined a university team, in which I met very friendly and caring people.
At the academic level, I got the hang of academics here pretty quickly even if the system of my home country was a little different.
The admission process was not complicated, all steps are explained explicitly on Laurentian’s website and when I had a question I would contact admissions@laurentian.ca, or chat with the university on social media.
I hope that my experience will help you to make your choice during your university selection!
