Laurentian University students come from all across the world. Many choose to live on-campus in one of Laurentian’s five residences. While everyone has a role to play in fostering a sense of community on campus, residence leaders contribute significantly to Residence Life. They support students in a wide range of questions, from things as simple as how to sign-up for intramural sports, to personal challenges like depression and anxiety. Through it all, they do all they can to help their student residents.
Hanna Beaudry, fourth-year Concurrent Education and Sports and Physical Education student, is West Residence’s Senior Residence Assistant. “To be able to be there for people, be able to support as well as lead events and help others, that is something I am always wanting to do.”
For Hannah, joining the Residence Life team is about giving back. She was positively impacted by the Residence Assistant (RA) who guided her as a first year student, and was inspired to make her own contribution to student life: “He was always there, being supportive… and making everyone on our floor feel so welcomed. Seeing the difference this RA made for other students made me think that being an RA is something I’d want to do.”
And that’s precisely a role that Hanna took on. Exemplifying her continuous involvement in the residence community, Hanna previously held positions of RA and Student Porter. In her opinion, the Residence Life team is a community made up of incredibly passionate individuals working towards common goals. “We really care for students. We want to create a happy, safe environment for everybody to experience all the fun times and build memories. That is really what we strive for…. Honestly [working in Residence Life], is remarkable and so much fun. The people are just amazing.”
Hanna is excited for opportunities this academic year to promote team building via the many social events hosted by Laurentian’s Residence Life team. Some of these events include; Jeopardy, LU’s Got Talent, Airbandz for Cancer, the residence baseball tournament and the residence formal dinner.
Hanna is an extraordinary addition to Laurentian’s Residence Life team. If you keep a lookout on campus, you are sure to see her friendly face. She and other leaders who contribute to the University’s sense of community make Laurentian a great place to live and learn.
