Next-generation sequencing provides ultra-high throughput, scalability and speed to provide scientists with a more cost effective approach to DNA sequencing. This model supports parallel sequencing using sequencing by synthesis (SBS) technology that tracks the addition of labelled nucleotides as they are incorporated into growing DNA strands. Within PCAF, this instrument is currently used for 16S metagenomics and microbial transcriptomics.
The rotopod is a robotic motion platform that replicates specific motions and vibrations within an environment. This model has a PC based control system which makes integration in any application simple and straightforward. Within PCAF, this instrument is a components of the Workplace Simulation laboratory (W-SIM) used to evaluate musculoskeletal health, human factors and work physiology to develop strategies to eliminate risks associated with the mining industry.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is used to observe local magnetic fields suuronding atomic nuclei. It provides information about the dynamics and kinetics of molecules as well as the interaction of molecules with its chemical environment. This technique is commonly used for organic molecules an metabolites, pepetides and proteins. Within PCAF, applications include confirmation of organometallic intermediate species, monitoring microbial and mammalain cell changes in response to environmental stress as well as characterizing polymers.
Model: Nikon Proscope HR
The Prosocpe HR is a high resolution digital microscope. It has video and image capturing resolutionnup to 1280 x 1024. The imager is a 1/4 inch 1.3 Mp colour sensor. With up to 200X magnification and an USB interface, this microscope uses reflected light with polar and non-polar options as well as a transmitted light option. Within PCAF, this instrument is being used to facilitate research in the Department of physics.
