Research Infosource has released its annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities and thanks to the contributions of Laurentian University researchers, the University is celebrating a year of incredible success.

December 13, 2023 - Research Infosource has released its annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities and thanks to the contributions of Laurentian University researchers, the University is celebrating a year of incredible success. Overall, Laurentian University ranks #30 out of the top 50 undergraduate, comprehensive, and doctoral/graduate institutions nationwide and is ranked 1st in Ontario amongst primarily undergraduate universities. The annual rankings are based on the total sponsored research income obtained in 2022. Further, the University features prominently in the Winners Circle for institutions primarily ranked at the undergraduate level:

  • 2nd Research Income
  • 1st Research Income Growth
  • 2nd Faculty Research Intensity
  • 2nd Graduate Student Research Intensity

Laurentian University’s research success stretches across a great depth and breadth of areas of expertise as faculty members and students (both undergraduate and graduate) have been hard at work advancing knowledge in their fields. Throughout the past year, a wide variety of projects have been undertaken with the support of federal and provincial funding in addition to private and public partnerships, while others are simply fueled by a passion for discovery. This year’s release is an opportunity to broadly highlight the important projects being undertaken, here are a few of the projects that we have recently highlighted:

Laurentian University’s research success stretches across many fields of study, from mining, biochemistry, and environmental remediation, to collaborative research with First Nations in partnership with the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute.

LU ranked #1 in total sponsored research income for the 5th year in a row

(February 2, 2022) - Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities were recently unveiled by Research Infosource and Laurentian University’s researchers earned the top rank for undergraduate research revenue for the fifth year in a row.

The annual rankings are based on the total amount of sponsored research income obtained in 2020. In addition to this top ranking, Laurentian University featured prominently in multiple categories including: 

  • second in graduate student research intensity (research funding per graduate student)
  • fourth in faculty research intensity (research funding per faculty member)
  • 11th in Ontario overall
  • 28th out of 50 in Canada

LU tops national ranking in undergraduate research revenue for fourth year running

Research Infosource also puts Laurentian high on list of both corporate and not-for-profit research income

December 15, 2020 -- Laurentian University is pleased to again see itself at the top of several Canada-wide  rankings by Research Infosource, including holding onto the number one spot for undergraduate research revenue for the fourth year in a row.

The organization's ranking is based on the total number of sponsored research income obtained in 2019. This includes outside funding from some of our many partners.

By the numbers:

  • ranked second in graduate student research intensity (research funding per graduate student)
  • ranked fourth in faculty research intensity (research funding per faculty member)
  • ranked 11th in Ontario overall
  • ranked 28th out of 50 in Canada

We also ranked third in undergraduate corporate research income, and fourth in not-for-profit undergraduate research Income.

Laurentian tops Canadian undergraduate research schools

Laurentian tops Canadian undergraduate research schools

(2018-10-26) Laurentian University tops the list of research income among undergraduate research universities in rankings of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities compiled by Research Infosource Inc.

The rankings show Laurentian raised $32 million in research funds in fiscal 2017. Laurentian also demonstrated the largest research income growth for the year in the undergraduate university category. Its research income jumped by 36.8%, while the national average for growth stood at 6.8%. 

This year, Research Infosource spotlighted university research partnerships—measured by grants or contracts received from corporate and not-for profit sources from 2013 to 2017. Laurentian University earned top honours in the undergraduate category for corporate research income growth.

Laurentian also earned the second-best ranking in terms of research intensity per graduate student.

Overall, Laurentian University ranks #28 out of the top 50 undergraduate, comprehensive, and doctoral/graduate institutions across the country. That is up two spots since last year and five spots since 2016.
