Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Dr Parissenti wins 2019 Research Excellence Award!
Body:

Message from Dr Eric R. Gauthier, Chair.

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our website.

Located in the Science I Building on the beautiful Laurentian University campus, our department offers programs leading to a B.Sc. in Chemistry, a B.Sc. in Biochemistry, as well as an M.Sc. in Chemical Sciences.

Our three B.Sc. Specialization programs are fully accredited from the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC). In addition to being a sign of good program quality, the CSC accreditation increases the professional mobility of our graduates, since their diploma is recognized throughout Canada and abroad.

The Department prides itself in providing hands-on training. In addition to several courses having a laboratory component, many opportunities are available to our students to gain valuable career experience: they can work alongside their professors as undergraduate interns or gain valuable experience through Co-op placements. This prepares our graduates to face a competitive job market or to undertake advanced studies.

Hailing from around the globe, our faculty members are actively involved in fundamental and applied research projects. Research in the department covers a wide range of fields, including environmental chemistry, biomaterials and surface chemistry, the molecular basis for the resistance to cancer chemotherapy, the chemistry of natural products, the role of gasotransmitters in cardiovascular diseases, as well as theoretical and computational chemistry.

Come on. Join us and be a part of the Chem-Biochem family! We don’t   !

Student Testimonial: Jenna Gilchrist

“I entered Laurentian as an undergraduate student who had no clue of what I wanted to study at a post-secondary level, all I knew was that it was going to be science oriented. Upon completion of my first year of studies in Biochemistry, I came to the realization that this was the program for me. From the professors in the Chemistry and Biochemistry department keeping the lectures stimulating and interactive, to the hands-on lab experience, this program has proved to be a well-rounded learning opportunity, helping me to gain knowledgeable qualities required in the workplace. Both the dedicated lab techs and teaching assistants play an important role in this overall experience and meetings with Academic Advisors have opened my mind to career opportunities that I would never have known of or even thought about. This has reassured me that the Biochemistry program was a good choice for what I can see myself doing in the future. Now in my second year, class sizes are smaller, allowing for a greater learning experience in lectures and one on one interactions with professors. Courses also become more specialized to the Biochemistry program, allowing one to learn the techniques used in biochemical research in the real world. ”
