Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Vice-President Academic and Indigenous Program (AVPAIP) of Laurentian University, the Manager, Indigenous Programs and Academic Initiatives will work in collaboration with the AVPAIP and supervise the Truth and Reconciliation Coordinator to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Calls to Action and forge a path forward towards reconciliation. The Manager of Indigenous Programs and Academic Initiatives will identify systemic barriers to attracting and promoting Indigenous faculty and staff and formulate effective solutions. This role will ensure compliance with Ministry directives and serve as an ambassador for Indigenous programs and promote programs to develop. The Manager of Indigenous Programs and Academic Initiatives will serve as an advisor and resource on inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge, tradition, culture and language in academic programming at the university. The Manager will have a personal connection with Indigenous academic communities.
The successful candidate will be
- Working with course designers and teaching staff this role will advise and support the development of Indigenous Course Content, Indigenous research and Indigenous degree programs;
- Target the development of curriculum to produce the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to address the specific needs of the Indigenous community;
- Identify new initiatives to address the integration of Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action throughout the curriculum;
- The Manager will support the Office of the AVPAIP to establish itself as a leader in Indigenous research through the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute in partnership with local First Nations, as well as the local urban First Nations, Métis, and Inuit community;
- Organize programs to engage and educate the broader University culture to further understanding and issue awareness;
- Advise and support on how to integrate Indigenous knowledge, and experiential learning practices into curriculum development and delivery;
- Advise and support on cultural safety and cultural humility;
- Work with Laurentian management and senior leaders on employment policies and language policies as they relate to Indigenous peoples in order to maximize the participation of indigenous staff;
- Advise and provide direct support to fully realize the tri-cultural mandate of Laurentian University;
- Working with the Office of Equity, Diversity and Human Rights, provide subject matter expertise on Indigenous issues and participate in addressing individual needs and systemic issues adversely affecting student and employee success;
- Prepare and submit research funding proposals and lobby funders to support research initiatives at Laurentian University. Coordinate with internal partners to ensure that the research is completed and all grant requirements are met; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of graduate degree and/or PhD candidate in a related discipline;
- Five (5) years of relevant work experience in an Indigenous community or urban Indigenous community setting is preferred;
- Demonstrated knowledge of and appreciation for the diversity of knowledge, cultural traditions, and spiritual practices of First Nation, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) peoples;
- Substantial knowledge of Indigenous/FNMI experiences in Canada, particularly in post secondary educational contexts, curriculum development and community consultation;
- Experience in writing grant applications and related reports;
- Knowledge and experience in program and curriculum development;
- Sound understanding of barriers and issues faced by Indigenous/FNMI students in obtaining post-secondary education including the ability to advise and support Indigenous, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion services;
- Excellent cross-cultural communications skills;
- Knowledge and experience in addressing institutional racism and discrimination; and
- Proof of Indigenous identity / Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (FNMI identity card and letter of belonging or affiliation with an FNMI community).
The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
