Basketball Player Amber-Lyn is Shooting for Success on the Court and in the Classroom

Basketball Player Amber-Lyn is Shooting for Success on the Court and in the Classroom

Amber-Lyn May balances life as an athlete and aspiring forensic pathologist while inspiring change among Indigenous youth.

September 12, 2024 – Amber-Lyn May is a member of the Tahltan First Nation, a dedicated player on the Laurentian women’s basketball team, and a diligent student aspiring to attend medical school. She is currently in her fourth year of Forensic Science at Laurentian University. In addition to her rigorous training schedule, Amber-Lyn manages her lab work, academic studies, and preparation for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) with passion and drive. She is motivated by her desire to be a role model for Indigenous youth.

Amber-Lyn was born in Northern B.C. and grew up in Calgary, Alberta in a big family with ten siblings. She made the move to Sudbury for Laurentian’s forensics program and basketball team. It was Head Coach Jason Hurley’s coaching style that drew the guard to the team and she has appreciated her time as a Voyageur above all else during her time at Laurentian.

When asked what has had the most impact on her throughout her Laurentian experience, Amber-Lyn was confident in her answer. “Definitely being a part of the LU basketball team. I grew up in a rough area and my family faced challenges, so traveling across the country to play university basketball has been an incredible opportunity that has really shaped me. I have felt so supported at Laurentian. Jason Hurley, my coach, is caring but disciplined and driven like I am. He pushes me to set and reach my goals.”

Like many student-athletes, Amber-Lyn’s schedule is full, especially in the sciences with lab work on top of training and academics. She is a fan of the lab, viewing it as enriching rather than challenging and a keystone of why she chose Laurentian for its forensic science program.

“The labs here are great because they’re so hands-on – we touch and experience what we’re learning about, rather than just talking about it. The forensics program at Laurentian is known to be one of the best in Canada. I appreciate that my professors have first-hand experience in the field and I have learned so much from them.” She describes examining bullets and blood spatter, emphasizing how helpful and interesting it is to be able to learn in such a practical way.

As a student Amber-Lyn is driven to inspire other Indigenous youth. “Competing at this level of basketball and meeting high academic standards, I want to represent my community and encourage other Indigenous youth to achieve their goals,” she says.

Looking ahead to her career Amber-Lyn is motivated to add Indigenous representation to Forensic Pathology in Canada. “As an Indigenous woman, I want to have a positive impact on my community. As a forensic pathologist with a connection to our culture, I want to make a difference for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. I want to be able to offer closure to the families.”

Ready to start her final year at Laurentian, and her sights set on medical school, Amber-Lyn is preparing to take her MCAT. On the court, she’s already busy training in preparation for the upcoming basketball season.

The Laurentian University Women’s Basketball team plays their home opener against the University of Toronto on October 25th.

Laurentian Receives Donation to Install a New International Quality Floor in the Ben Avery Gym

Laurentian Receives Donation to Install a New International Quality Floor in the Ben Avery Gym

Athletes to benefit from state-of-the-art sprung floor by September thanks to donors.

June 25, 2024 - The existing flooring and subfloor in the Ben Avery Gym will be replaced this summer thanks to one family's generous donation. Danica Robertson and Robert Martin are the parents of a current Laurentian student and say they felt inspired by their family’s experience with the university.

“We believe that Laurentian students are getting a high-quality education and the athletes on the court deserve a high-quality experience as well,” said Robert Martin. “We have confidence in Laurentian and hope that our investment inspires others to support Laurentian University and help enhance the student experience.”

The Robertson-Martin family donated $250,000 to fund the entire project from start to finish. The donation covers the cost of the removal of the current flooring and subfloor, down to the concrete, as well as the purchase and installation of a new high performance sprung hardwood floor that exceeds the top international standards for basketball floors.

As architects, Robertson and Martin know the positive impact of design and quality environments to foster human wellbeing and develop vibrant communities. “Our family saw an opportunity to support Laurentian and help improve the student experience for current and future generations,” said Martin. “We are very excited at the potential of this improvement to nurture happier, healthier athletes.”

President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Lynn Wells expressed gratitude for the donation. “The Laurentian community is deeply grateful to the Robertson-Martin family. This gift will have a significant positive impact on our athletes and beyond. Their investment has a positive impact on our campus culture as a whole and is a testament to the pride that the community has in our school.”

“A high-quality facility will help entice students and student-athletes from across Canada to choose Laurentian. We hope that this impactful upgrade might inspire the continued revitalization of the storied Ben Avery,” said Peter Hellstrom, Director, Voyageur Athletics and Campus Recreation.

Work on the floor in the Ben Avery Gym is already underway and is expected to be completed by the beginning of August.

Cheer team passionate about spreading pride

(January 17, 2023) - Laurentian University’s sports teams have a strong community of supporters. No matter the sport, when one attends a Voyageurs game, there is sure to be enthusiasm from the sidelines. This enthusiasm is amplified by Laurentian’s Cheerleading team, a group of twenty-three hardworking students dedicated to spreading Laurentian pride.

Marlina Forgione, a fourth year Concurrent Education student, is this year’s Cheer Captain. She collaborates with Mikylie McClean, the team’s Cheer Coach, to guide the team as they perform routines at half-time shows for Voyageurs men’s and women’s basketball teams. The team also cheered for lacrosse athletes during their final game of the 2022 season. They are optimistic for future opportunities to cheer for a variety of Laurentian sports teams and events.

The Cheer team is now preparing for their own competition - Cheer Evolution Winterfest, a cheerleading event that will take place at the Leon’s Centre in Kingston, Ontario on March 4, 2023.

As team leaders, Marlina and Mikylie organize team practices and choreograph half-time performances. Having joined the Cheer team in her first year as a Laurentian student, Marlina looks back fondly at her experience: “I have made so many friends, met so many people, and have had a lot of fun. In high school, I had an amazing community, and joining the cheerleading team at Laurentian supported my sense of community.” Marlina described that she is passionate not only about cheer but also about gymnastics.

“From the first practice, you could feel a sense of togetherness and family amongst team members. We continuously work together to improve as a unit, and we are passionate about this,” added Marlina. “As team captain, this has been incredible to be a part of.”

For those interested in joining the Laurentian Cheer team, tryouts occur every September and all are welcome. “Your skill level doesn't matter. Just come try out and do your best,” encouraged Marlina.
